  • Federer says he's fine while other reports say he's still ill

    3/3/10 5:18 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer says he's fine while other reports say he's still ill The health of Roger Federer remains a mystery with contrasting reports emerging from the player's Facebook page and an American tennis website.

Federer, who missed the Barclays Championships last week in Dubai due to a lung infection, was apparently checked out by doctors after arriving Sunday morning in Switzerland.

The world No. 1, who last played in the Australian Open final, recently had encouraging news: "I am feeling really good again and I was happy to hear from my doctor today that I have the green light to start working out again so I plan to try and play in Indian Wells next week. Thanks for the well wishes."

Contrasting reports indicate that the Swiss might pull out of the Indian Wells Masters starting next Wednesday due to his condition, according to an unsourced report on an American website.

Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, has indicated that his own return after resting his troubled knees should come at Indian Wells, where he will hope to defend the 2009 title.

Yay champ!

FEDistheGOAT , 3/3/10 5:58 PM

that is a realy flattering picture :P :P

Sib69 , 3/3/10 6:34 PM

Federer says he PLANS to TRY and play IW, that's hardly a cast iron guarantee that he will play. On the podcast on Tennis.com, Peter Bodo says categorically, that Federer will not play. So it's not clear whether he will or not, and as I said, I hope he does play.

carrie , 3/3/10 6:38 PM

sure carrie. we really believe that you really give a damn about federer.

maxi , 3/3/10 6:48 PM

maxi, I really do not care what you think.

carrie , 3/3/10 7:07 PM

Tennis.com has scrapped the Peter Bodo report on federer. Hopefully that is a sign that it was wrong information.

FEDistheGOAT , 3/3/10 7:08 PM

It'll be nice to see both Roger and Rafa back on the court.

nellie , 3/3/10 7:11 PM

http://www.tennis.com/ticker/index.aspx

They have updated and removed the Peter Bodo article from the index and instead inserted this article - Federer expects to play Indian Wells tournament - for March 03, 2010.
As I said earlier, hoping its a good sign.

FEDistheGOAT , 3/3/10 7:30 PM

I hope both Federer and Rafa meet at IW, that will definitely create a buzz.

carrie , 3/3/10 7:33 PM

nellie, I'm with you. Of course, as a Nole fan, I want HIM to win as many trophies as possible, and it would be much easier for him to do that without Rafa and Federer in the draw, but it is just not the same... I want "healthy" competition! :)

OllyK , 3/3/10 7:34 PM

OllyK! a fair poster! yes. this will be great to see.

As FEDisthe GOAT said, bodo has now removed his article. He is not one of federer's greatest fans at all, we all know that.but i suppose, we just have to wait and see how federer gets on in his practise sessions and whether or not he feels fit enough to enter the tournament. It will be said if he does withdraw, but I would rather see a healthy and fit federer play, rather than making his lungs worse.

Get well soon fed!

maxi , 3/3/10 7:40 PM

semi or a final ,i donot care .all i want is te resumption of the rafa-roger rivalry ! it has something unique ! go rafa and roger , tackle the field well :D

vamosrafa , 3/3/10 8:19 PM

Allez Roger! .....Your dance with Rafa on court is better than that with Shakira!

McQ , 3/3/10 9:56 PM

I look forward to seeing both Rafa and Roger on the court at Indian Wells. Let the games begin anew!

Nativenewyorker , 3/3/10 10:26 PM

If Fed's website says he has the go ahead to prepare to play then he will. I also look forward to seeing The Fed and Rafa on the court making their magic happen again.

AceIt , 3/3/10 11:04 PM

We should wait until we have confirmation from the Fed camp. I don't like this speculating. Pete Bodo said last year that Fed wouldn't play Montreal, but he did.

10sfan , 3/3/10 11:33 PM

Yeah, never believe the media! and I hate it when people speculate. It will be great if Rafa and Roger are able to do the haiti event along with Agassi and Sampras I am really looking forward to it. I suspect Roger is okay, he wouldn't risk his health at this stage in his career I believe so I am sure his website is a correct guide line.

afrodite7 , 3/4/10 1:31 AM

fedmug & fans getting excuses in early. fedclown loses to a joke like fish he can say he is ill.

spadea , 3/4/10 2:11 AM

ha! Fed doesnt need to prove anything. doesnt matter who he loses to at IW...when it comes to the slams he will demolish those same tom dick and Harry's.

atul1985 , 3/4/10 4:14 AM

To 'spadea': Roger is not making excuses. Lung infections are serious business and he needs to put his health first. Why you come here and make those hateful comments about Roger is sad to see.

10sfan , 3/4/10 6:12 AM

attackingtennisrules returns.
Fed doesnt need to prove anything at all.
health comes first.

maxi , 3/4/10 7:32 AM

spadea, why arent you posting as ATR? you used to keep using "fedmug" and having a go at rafael nadal all the time, anyone knows that their rivalry is one of the best of all time. and I really dont think that federer needs to prove anything to you.

maxi , 3/4/10 7:35 AM

spedea:
at least if she is 12 then she watched the six years of Roger's domination
on the other hand you must be around 5 becuase abviously you wasnt old enough to understand what is going on for the last six years
loser! go dance on the video man ,that is your class

tennislover , 3/4/10 10:34 AM

spadea, you are a very poor WUM who is trying to disrupt the message board. Nothing more needs to be said about you.

discofever , 3/4/10 10:50 AM

Yeah another thing:
I hope you and carrie can know each other in deeper way you two can make cute crazy couple nothing is nicer than two lunatic people hang out together
You should watch Shattered Island that is your place (the Island i mean) since you are now a fan of art i assume , if you know what i mean.

tennislover , 3/4/10 2:31 PM

Cheers, tennislover.

carrie , 3/4/10 2:50 PM

Fed is known for his carefully planed schedule and smart participation at tennis tournaments. That among other things has kept him healthy and in form for all these years. He is not at all naive to take part in the event not being healthy in full. So, although it would be great to see him playing I doubt he will be there if he is not in perfect health condition. He made such a mistake at the AO 2008 and then was struggling the whole season...

natashao , 3/4/10 4:14 PM

natasho, so much truth in everything you wrote. Why do you guys think Fed is still winning majors at age 28 and ranked #1? It's because he puts his fitness and health first.
And spadea, your hateful comments make me sick. I also saw what you wrote on Ricky's article about Gulbis.

10sfan , 3/4/10 6:57 PM

how rude. spadea, i think carrie would have a little more taste anyway.i may not agree with everything she says, but hasnt name called and certainly isnt as rude as you.(yet).

tennislover, whilst i feel sometimes carrie should go to an island on her own, (for r&r), i think that to spend it with spadehead would be too cruel a punishment.

maxi , 3/4/10 7:01 PM

Woah........just joined this website.......it's tough........you go Fed......show them how 16 is done. When all the rest catch up then it's time to sing their praises. The one thing Fed does is back the talk up with the racket.

AceIt , 3/4/10 7:38 PM

@ welcome Acelt :)
That is definitely what fed does. He if anybody has the right to talk even more of himself.
I wish he bragged like everyone accuses him of, I loved Ali for that reason
- Be the best, Know you are the best, Let everyone know you are the best! Fake modest becomes only fake champs i say!

Cheers.

FEDistheGOAT , 3/4/10 7:58 PM

The thing is, players of yesteryear never got paid for their troubles, in fact they were not allowed to get paid at all for playing, and it was against the rules to engage in advertising or any kind of activity that would earn them money as a tennis player, but they kept going. Wimbledon used to give the champion a £10 voucher to spend in their shop, just imagine, they kept all the proceeds for themselves. The players could not afford decent accommodation, some of them slept in the locker rooms.

In those days, no pros earned money from tennis, to compete on the tour, they had to be amateurs, and if they wanted to earn a living they had to leave the tour and go professional. All these players the top ones included, must have had other jobs, and did not rely on any income from tennis, yet they played and competed with the same commitment as the top players today.

So to get to the top, they just have to find a way of funding themselves, but if the challenger and sattilite events are generaing revenue for the organisers, then the players should be paid accordingly.

carrie , 3/4/10 8:29 PM

i think its hard for fed to play....he didnt practice and the tournment is in the doors...and if he play its for getting ready for miami...i hope he will play if the doctors give him the green light....

fedfarfan , 3/4/10 8:29 PM

just look forward to seeing federer play when he is fit and healthy and really ready to win more tournaments. if he decides not to play IW, he will do it for the right reasons, there really is no point in playing when he can take an extra week off and be sure for miami.

maxi , 3/4/10 9:10 PM

Owhh well, even if he plays, he'll be not at his best. Better rest, Fed.

GET WELL SOON, MR. CHAMP!!

torres9 , 3/5/10 12:56 AM

I really wanted to see Roger at the Hit for Haiti event next Friday night, but I agree there's probably a degree of risk. Lung infections can be serious and often reoccurring. He could be down for several weeks or even months if he's not careful. Guess I'll just have to be happy watching Rafa work at his hobby.

Maya , 3/5/10 6:51 AM

"Contrasting reports indicate that the Swiss might pull out of the Indian Wells Masters starting next Wednesday due to his condition, according to an unsourced report on an American website."

So this web site knows more about Federer than he knows about himself? It is tabloid journalism. Federer is not American so he is fair game for the US media.

tennismasta , 3/6/10 4:01 AM

can you post the link, tennismasta? thanks

maxi , 3/6/10 4:26 AM

http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/Federer?ref=ts

Fed just had a hit at Indian Wells. surely this means he is most likely playing

tj600 , 3/6/10 5:53 AM

may i add too what you said tj:
he is feeling great as this is his first hit in 2 and half weeks if he is in Indian wells that means he is there to play.............
good luck to the champ and hopefully he is going to continue feeling good

tennislover , 3/6/10 8:55 AM

tj,

thanks for the link. crossed fingers that federer is finding his balance again. lung infections can be nasty. as long as doctors have given him the all clear and federer knows best above everyone. I just cant wait to see him play again. Tennis isnt the same for me.

maxi , 3/6/10 9:34 AM

tennislover/tj,

just read the link. thanks. definitely looks promising.

Oh no, not mono again!

carrie , 3/6/10 9:59 AM

zare and carrie, it's nice to know you both care so much.

maxi , 3/6/10 10:08 AM

zare, i read the following on roger's facebook page:

Back on the court in Indian Wells today. Felt great to hit as it was the first hit I had in 2 and a half weeks.

I presume his doctor has given him the "green light?". If he did have mono then his doctor (you would think, would have advised him NOT to play?), but of course there will always be scaremongering amongst journalists - similar to the scaremongering written by Pete Bodo who didnt even think Roger would make the flight to IW, and am fairly certain he was "hoping" federer would be ill forever. he isnt a big fan and never has been.

maxi , 3/6/10 10:14 AM

Maxi...as I have said a lot of times... I don't like Fed ...but that doesn't mean that I want him ill... I want him in good form and good health...and THEN I want Nole to beat him. That's sport isn't it???
I just wanted to give insight in swiss journals and press speculations...

zare , 3/6/10 1:48 PM

zare, of course. there are too many speculations about fed right now, so i guess we all just have to wait to watch the man play! and zare, I cannot wait. Can you imagine if novak was ill, and you didnt watch him play for weeks, you understand the need, right?

maxi , 3/6/10 7:09 PM

Sure zare, want a healthy competition is what we all suppose to want on the other hand not denying achivements and aperecialtion of great records is something i love to see from other player's fans for a change.
it would be interesting to know if he is there alone or with his family as we all know Mirka was sick too,i hope they all do fine, the surface there prefers Murray and Nadal's game more than Federer's and Djok's so lets see what is going to happen sadly DP is out of IW

tennislover , 3/6/10 8:40 PM

yes tennislover the surface always is good for Murray right?? Tennis so boring without murray! He is the heartthrob of tennis ok!! Tennis so badly wants him back!!
He will win this one promise! By the way no surface can be good for Mr.Arthritic ok, he should go back to the caves he came from and say use his club and leave his raket!

Go Muzzaaa!!!

Article : Fit Federer already on court at Indian Wells

Indian Wells, California - Five days after arriving last weekend in Zurich from Dubai, Roger Federer was already on the practise courts of the Indian Wells Masters after recovering from his lung infection. Pictures showed the world number one who missed the Barclays Championships last week in Dubai due to his illness, racket in hand on the hardcourts under the Californian desert sun Friday.

The Swiss has a week until he's due on court for the Hit for Haiti 2 benefit next Friday night which precedes his opening match next weekend.

Federer apparently received the all-clear from Swiss doctors this week before travelling nine time zones west to California.

The 28-year-old won the event from 2004-2006.

More injury pullout news hit the first Masters 1000 of the season as Argentine Juan Del Potro withdrew with his lingering wrist injury and Chile's Fernando Gonzalez pulled out to work on earthquake relief in his homeland after this weekend's Davis Cup tie against Israel.

The number 10 Gonzalez reportedly hopes to take a page from Federer's philanthropic handbook and organize a relief effort for his earthquake-ravaged homeland within days.

Reports indicate that the top Chilean is in contact with Federer and Rafael Nadal in hopes they will play in any benefit for victims. Gonzalez reportedly wants to hold his event around the time of the Miami Masters in mid-March.

Why would fed go to California if not to play? But then, my colleague's counter argument was that he might have flown over to get better than and then go on to Miami.. Oh well, just want to see him on court soon.

FEDistheGOAT , 3/6/10 9:04 PM

Agassi is going to coach Andy Murray?? Also, Nadal was reported to have scared the director of Paranormal Activity by suddenly coming in his gay parade dress!! Djokovic is going to act in next Star wars movie as the voice of darth vader and federer is going to act in next part of Cheaper by the dozen!

GoMuzza , 3/6/10 9:09 PM

GoMuzza? is there something wrong? Are you going a little mad? I dont understand your posts.

maxi , 3/6/10 11:46 PM

I am sure that we shall see Roger in good shape...
Gomuzza, go get some help!

zare , 3/7/10 12:39 AM

GoMuzza if you are trying to be funny you gotta work on the lines, they are so bad man

tennislover , 3/7/10 8:25 AM

FEDistheGOAT, I'll call you FIG from now on, as its easier! There is more good news on facebook and gotennis, so crossed fingers it will go well for federer.

German tennis legend Boris Becker in awe
Startling statements from Boris Becker in Gulf News exclusive

By Alaric Gomes, Senior Reporter Published: 00:01 March 6, 2010

German tennis legend Boris Becker will be attending next week's Laureus Awards in Abu Dhabi. :

German legend Boris Becker sees no-one except Rafael Nadal as a worthy challenger to Roger Federer in men's tennis.

"Nadal came along in 2008 and challenged Federer. This only helped Federer to raise his level and play even better but now with Nadal out with an injury, I can see no-one capable of challenging possibly the greatest player of all times," Becker told Gulf News from Germany yesterday.

Becker will be one of the stars and legends of sport attending next week's Laureus Awards in Abu Dhabi.

"Federer has 16 Grand Slam titles at the moment and it was Nadal who has been consistently challenging him.

"All we need is a tough competitor who will come along and challenge Federer. But there is no-one at the moment, not even Murray," the German added.

"I've played some of the greats including Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg and Bjorn Borg a bit. I was at the Australian Open in January [Federer versus Murray] and I am yet to see a player of Federer's calibre," Becker stated.

"In a Grand Slam he [Federer] is a different player altogether. We need a player who can get close to him and beat him in a Grand Slam."

maxi , 3/7/10 12:54 PM

This is why Fedfans want to see the back of Rafa, because he is the only one who owns Federer.

carrie , 3/7/10 3:26 PM

yeah we cant wait because Rafa owns Federer.oh my God Nadal please please come back cant wait,
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.the post is by carrie,ok doesnt worth even the lines!

tennislover , 3/7/10 3:38 PM

carrie, why is it that you have to take a really respectful and informative piece of writing and twist it so that it sounds shoddy and dull? only you do this. rafa doesnt own roger. no one owns anyone. i dont want to see the back of rafa at all. i think by far and away, YOU want to see the back of roger, dont you carrie? It's all about you.

if you read it carefully, becker says that roger raised his game (and he needed to), because this is the only way to develop, to move on, to get better and he did, didnt he? thank you rafa for the times when you helped roger do this, to win more and more.

tennislover, what do you think of the article?

maxi , 3/7/10 5:31 PM

@maxi,
while it always is a pleasure to reaffirm fed's greatness, what i loved the most was that here is someone who has played most of the greats AND also watched fed AND the past greats - I say this because he grew up watching the past greats, played among some of the greatest to have played and now in his retirement gets to see the pinnacle of tennis and to add spice even a great rivalry.. as far as tennis lovers go, becker sure is someone to be envied, he has had the best of everything!! :)

"I've played some of the greats including Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg and Bjorn Borg a bit. I was at the Australian Open in January [Federer versus Murray] and I am yet to see a player of Federer's calibre,"

Any of those greats would come out anyday and stand by becker to say fed was the best they have ever seen. So I dont know why we bother with a few dissenters among crazy fans who hate fed for personal reasons because they just cant stand a very talented player who is not groping all over the place with pretended humility.

@ carrie, if your only argument in favour of nadal is the h2h, you must be better off if he doesnt meet fed much again. Untill last year all murray could talk about was his great H2H with fed and look where that has landed up now. If nadal over the same time was good enough to meet fed, he would have ended up the same way and is anyway headed down that road. i think all even the bilndest rafa fans can see that the h2H record is not going to stay like it is if rafa becomes good enough to meet fed. as it is too outside clay the Gs record stands at 2-2 so give it a rest about rafa owning fed, we'll admit that in so many years only rafa challenged fed and that should be enough since that in itself is a great honour.

FEDistheGOAT , 3/7/10 6:13 PM

FIG, I can see you've got a crystal ball.

carrie , 3/7/10 7:11 PM

@carrie anyone can have a crystal ball. Haven't you heard of Gypsies? :) Fun of watching sports is also in making insane predictions! but i hope mine comes true and i think you do too except that you would change the climax a bit. No problems. Cheers, Allez and vamos.

FEDistheGOAT , 3/7/10 7:36 PM

FIG,
Tous chez!
