Spanish Davis Cup coach Albert Costa is concerned about the mental game of Rafael Nadal as the jinxed ace battles continuing problems due to his chronic knee problems.
Nadal is out of next weekend's Davis Cup World Group tie in the north of the country against Switzerland - which is also missing Roger Federer.
But 2002 French Open winner Costa says that Rafa is being weighed down by doubts on his long-term fitness.
"He is worried about his physical state but he’s working every day to get better,” said Costa of the star who last competed in the Australian Open when he had to retire hurt in the quarter-finals against Andy Murray.
“Until last year at Roland Garros and the (fourth-round knee) problems, he had achieved everything,” said Costa. "It’s normal, after 22 years and winning everything, to have some down time.”
Nadal is working at home on the island of Mallorca to come good in time for his title defence at the Indian Wells Masters from March 10 in California.

afrodite7, rafa will be just fine! it's not as bad as you read! it's normal for a player to concentrate on his ndividual tennis after battling injuries as opposed to playing davis cup. if spain wins the first round, i'm sure nadal will be prepared to play further down the road, if necessary. i remember reading after nadal lost the french open last year, that he stated he would never again go beyond his limit to play! he talked about how he played in pain many times to accommodate his fans and others. i'm so happy that he has learned that hard lesson! i think the treatment he received at the french open at the hands of the crowd taught him a lesson, which is to look out for himself more and not to give everything he has because sometimes you break your back for people and they don't show any gratitude! the way he's thinking now, i think will pay off in the long run! smart decision!

Rafa should be concerned as his style of play is so hard on his body. At 23 he has the potential and talent to win many more tournaments and is a great person. I wish him well and look forward to seeing him at Indian Wells.

rafa's facebook posts have been very positive he wrote
" Last week was great, with great practice and a lot of work well done. Marc Lopez came to practice with me. I am feeling better and better and playing well so looking forward to Indian Wells."
I also want to take the opportunity to send the Chileans a big hug and my support. There are always Chileans at every tournament making themselves heard. Big hug to all of them. We are with you!
VAMOS!!!!!!!

VAMOOSS !! with the full wholehearted support of his fans all over the world and here on TT , he will get back to full fitness(altho i think he already has). i was reading an article in which the author was convinced nadal will dominate on clay again .his injury at oz was a blessing in disguise and gave him much needed rest and that way he avoided playing rubbish tournaments he cud have played wid a fine knee.
Rafa has a very good record for indian wells and miami and the period march-may does not pass I think there is no reason for us to get even slightly disappointed because these are the months he shows his best and catches all momentum that propels him to victories on other courts too. :)

Of this is a worry for Nadal and for Costa, Nadal has made some great contributions to 3 davis cup ties now. He is Spains all time no.1 tennis player, the one who has delivered... and for Rafa, with all this in the back of his mind it must be difficult for him to stay focused. His never say die attitude is what he was always famous for and if there is something like this holding him back and not letting him play with the heart and desire that made him so special then it must be killing him mentally, he has the biggest heart I have ever seen on the court and yet his body is letting him down, its damn sad and double damn sad for tennis. I hope he can get through this, he is so young and tennis isn't the same without the challenge of a fit full flight Rafa around. Good luck to him.x
