Gael Monfils made the sacrifice this week for the French Davis Cup effort, changing his ambitious plan to play ATP singles in Acapulco, resting instead for the upcoming tie against Germany in Toulon.
The move sat well with French captain Guy Forget, who has also called up Richard Gasquet to join Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Michael Llodra and Julien Benneteau on the side.
Monfils had been hoping to defend his Mexican final from 2009 but thought the better when he got some advice from wiser heads.
"This shows to everyone that I'm here for the team, even if it hurts my individual career," Monfils explained. "Not defending my ranking points in Acapulco could well deprive me from being seeded in Indian Wells and Miami.
"But it also pleases me to put an end to all the polemics."
Forget was pleased with the late decision: "I take this as great news. I spoke to Gael many times about it, but also to his coach Roger (Rasheed) in Australia, after Gael had left.
"But I know that his teammates also had conversations with him. So by taking this decision, he is sending a very strong signal to his comrades."
