  • Acapulco -- Ferrero, Ferrer and Gonzalez move into the semis

    2/26/10 4:36 PM | Cheryl Murray
Acapulco -- Ferrero, Ferrer and Gonzalez move into the semis The Acapulco semifinals were set when Juan Carlos Ferrero secured the final spot in a late-evening win over Nicolas Almagro.

David Ferrer def. Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 6-4

David Ferrer’s quarterfinal match progressed as his often do – with a bevy of service breaks. Ferrer is one of the best returners in the men’s game and his matches reflect his ability to damage his opponent’s serve. The Spaniard earned an impressive 12 break points on Pablo Cuevas’ serve on Thursday. The top-ranked player from Uruguay fought off 8 of them, but 4 was still more than enough for Ferrer to get the straight-set win. The match was only close in the opening set because Ferrer’s serve is nowhere near as strong as his return game. Cuevas snagged a pair of service breaks in the opening set, but it wasn’t enough to hold the Spaniard off.

Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Nicolas Almagro 6-1, 5-7, 6-2

The strangest of the quarterfinal matches was contested between Spaniards Juan Carlos Ferrero and Nicolas Almagro. The first set was a complete romp for Ferrero. The veteran held Almagro to 1 game for the entire set and an anemic 14 points total. Almagro poured on the pressure in the second set, though. The set moved along without a service break until Ferrero’s last service game before the tiebreaker. Almagro got the surprise break, and the match was level at a set a piece. The revelry did not last long for Almagro. Ferrero went up an early break and then secured another; he did not face any break points on his own serve in the deciding set.

Fernando Gonzalez def. Eduardo Schwank 3-6, 6-3, 7-5

Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez had a surprisingly difficult time getting past Argentine qualifier Eduardo Schwank. Gonzalez was not able to make a dent on the Schwank serve in the first set, even though the Argentine served at just 48%. Gonzalez dropped serve once, and that was enough for Schwank to take the opening set. Gonzalez came back in the second to level the match as the Argentine’s level started to drop off a bit. Fortunately for the spectators, the third set was good quality from both players. Gonzalez only just squeaked out the match-winning service break as Schwank was serving to force a tiebreaker.
