  • Ferrero, Gonzalez and Ferrer advance in Acapulco

Ferrero, Gonzalez and Ferrer advance in Acapulco It was a good day for the seeds in Acapulco as many of the favorites advanced to the second round.

Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Diego Junqueira 6-2, 6-3

Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero had an easy day at the office against Argentine Diego Junqueira on Tuesday. The Spaniard surrendered a service break in each of the sets, but he was more than able to make up for those small glitches on his return game. Ferrero is the No. 4 seed and he is the in-form clay-courter at the moment. The 30 year old has 2 tournament wins in 2 clay court events that he has entered this year (Costa Do Sauipe and Buenos Aires). Ferrero will go for a third in Acapulco.

Fernando Gonzalez def. Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2)

The field in Acapulco is deep this week and American Sam Querrey could not snag a seed for the tournament. He was unfortunate to draw No. 2 seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile as his opening round opponent. Querrey is not at his best on clay; like most Americans, he prefers the firm ground of hard-court tennis to the slickness of clay. Still, he handled himself well against Gonzalez. The Chilean captured an early break in the first set, gave that break back and then secured another to take a one-set lead.

Querrey came back firing in the second set. He replied to Gonzalez with his own early service break. Better serving from the American allowed him to keep his lead to force a deciding set.

The third set was a stalemate through the tiebreaker. The two men traded breaks of serve, with neither able to break open the match. Only in the tiebreak was Gonzalez able to enforce his will on the American and show his superior clay-court prowess.

David Ferrer def. Potito Starace 6-2, 6-4

Like his countrymen Juan Carlos Ferrero, David Ferrer had an easy time of it in his opening round match. Ferrer took on Italian clay courter Potito Starace. Ferrer showed his characteristic toughness on serve. The Spaniard converted 4 of 6 break points, and though he won just 57% of the total points in the match, his play on big points reflected a blowout victory. Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci is waiting for Ferrer in the second round.
