Fourth seed Jeremy Chardy and defending champion Mardy Fish both advanced to the second round of competition at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships Tuesday afternoon.
(4) Jeremy Chardy def. Xavier Malisse 6-3, 7-5
Fourth seed Jeremy Chardy struck 20 aces during his opener with Xavier Malisse on Tuesday, recording a 6-3, 7-5 victory in one hour and 42 minutes. The 23-year-old Frenchman, who captured 37 of 50 points on first-serve, is through to his second consecutive round of 16 in Delray Beach. Tuesday’s win signaled just the second win for Chardy in 2010, adding to his lone success in Memphis.
Chardy will meet Santiago Giraldo in the second round. The Colombian defeated wildcard veteran Vincent Spadea in straight sets late Tuesday afternoon, 6-2, 6-3.
Mardy Fish def. Christophe Rochus 5-7, 6-3, 3-3 (retired)
Defending champion Mardy Fish needed to rally from a set down to level his first-round match with Christophe Rochus. The American struck 25 aces en route to reaching 3-3 in the decider, when Rochus called it a day at the two-hour mark. Fish had trailed Rochus 0-1 in the head-to-head series, losing the pair’s only meeting at the 2009 Memphis tournament.
Fish moves on to battle Mischa Zverev in the round of 16. The German held on to knock out eighth seed Michael Russell in the first round, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
