The South American clay-court swing makes a fourth and final stop this week, as Fernando Verdasco and Fernando Gonzalez headline the field of competitors at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
Clay-court competition concludes for the last week of February, as a solid group of players head to Acapulco for the 2010 Abierto Mexicano Telcel. The main draw is comprised of 32 players, all intent to bring home championship honors as opening-round action begins on Monday.
Fernando Verdasco enters into the tournament at the top seed, having received a last-minute wildcard to replace an injured Gael Monfils. The 26-year old commences the week with an 8-2 season mark, having won the San Jose crown over three-time champion Andy Roddick. Verdasco crashed out early in Memphis (lost to Chardy), but looks to regroup as he opens against Fabio Fognini. The Madrid native debuted at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in 2004, where he finished runner-up to Carlos Moya.
Verdasco is joined by World No. 12 Fernando Gonzalez, who makes his second appearance at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. The 29-year-old Chilean holds a 6-2 record in 2010, bolstered by a run to the Santiago semifinal (lost to Bellucci). Gonzalez’s last trip to Acapulco came in 2004, where he withdrew during a quarterfinal clash against former World No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten. The veteran is set to battle Sam Querrey in a tough opening-round battle.
Copa Telmex finalist David Ferrer, Costa Do Sauipe and Buenos Aires champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, Memphis runner-up John Isner, two-time defending champion Nicolas Almagro, Juan Monaco and Albert Montanes comprise the remainder of seeded players.
Additional combatants include Movistar Open winner Thomaz Bellucci, Memphis champion Sam Querrey, Brasil Open finalist Lukasz Kubot, wildcard Carlos Moya and former World No. 7 Richard Gasquet. The veteran Spaniard and the Frenchman are scheduled to square off in the opening round Monday night.
Former finalist David Nalbandian will not return to Acapulco after sustaining a right-leg injury in Buenos Aires. The Argentine saw his return to full-time action cut short, forced to withdraw from competition before his quarterfinal.
