Roger Federer is out of this week's ATP event in Dubai, citing a lung infection. The No. 1 player in the world hopes to return for the Indian Wells Masters.
Roger Federer withdrew from the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships on Sunday with a lung infection. Federer, slated to be the top seed ahead of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, is now targeting an early-March return at the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells.
"I've been taking it easy, relaxing as much as possible," explained Federer, who picked up the infection about a week ago according to Dubai tournament organizers. "My breathing is a bit difficult and everything feels a bit slow. I can't take any chances until I'm fit again. It could be better, it could be worse.
"I'm hoping to be back for Indian Wells, but of course there are no promises," Federer added. "This is something that will be finished only with proper treatment."
Federer's pullout follows the withdrawal of Andy Roddick on Saturday. Roddick, who won the Dubai title in 2008 but skipped the event last year in a protest of the Shahar Peer visa situation, has been dealing with a slight shoulder problem. The seventh-ranked American lost to Fernando Verdasco in the San Jose final earlier this month and fell to eventual champion Sam Querrey last Friday in the Memphis quarterfinals.
Jan Hernych earned a lucky loser spot in the field as a result of Federer's absence while Tommy Robredo replaced the world No. 1 at the top of the draw. The highest-ranked participating players, in order, are now Djokovic, Murray, Nikolay Davydenko, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Marin Cilic.

Federer is hoping to have recovered in time to play at the ATP World Masters at Indian Wells which starts on March 11, or if that came too soon then at the following tournament in Miami.
"He has got a lung infection," announced ATP circuit official Stephen Duckett said. "He saw a doctor and he was advised not to play for a fortnight."
The Australian Open winner said: "There are no guarantees that I will play at Inidan Wells - this could be a maximum of six weeks, but if it's treated properly everything should be fine and I should be back fairly quickly."....................

tennislover, you've lost me, what on earth are you on about? Why would I be on cloud 9, I've just simply posted an excerpt from the Daily Telegraph which I think is informative. The article was much longer, so you can go to the paper online and read the rest of it.

Sorry to hear about Fed's illness, hope he is back on the tour soon.
I will stay away from venturing a guess as to where he picked it up.
Suffice it to say that to get an lung infection from a protracted cold in Winter in Northern Europe or North America is not unusual...

Was planning to drop by fo the tourney :( plans cancelled i guess. No point going just to see the djoker win. is Murray playing?
FEDistheGOAT , 2/22/10 6:38 PM
Yes he is - right now, in fact. First two games must have been the longest ever in an ATP match. Still, I expect he'll come through.

If Federer doesn't play IW, someone else will have to take his place in Hit for Haiti, I wonder who that will be, who has the highest No of GS in the top 10, off the top of my head I think Roddick, Nole and Delpo have one each, that's it.
carrie , 2/23/10 4:37 PM
carrie, maybe it will be hewitt!

According to SkySports, Hewitt is facing more hip surgeries, so I'm not sure that he is touring at the moment.

Update on Hewitt:
News 2010
January 30
FORMER world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt has been forced to undergo a second bout of hip surgery and faces another long stint on the sidelines.
Hewitt, who was beaten in straight sets by top seed Roger Federer in the fourth round of the Australian Open, hopes to return to the sport in time for the French Open in May.
Hewitt said he injured his right hip while playing in the recent Hopman Cup.
"I was in a reasonable amount of pain but I've played with pain before ... I'm able to block it out as much as possible," he said.
"But against (Marcos) Baghdatis in Sydney it wasn't good and that's why I had to fall away at that match and concentrate on the Australian Open.
Hewitt, who turns 29 next month, said he "absolutely" had the desire to keep playing.
"Otherwise I wouldn't have had the operation straight away.
"At the end of the day with the scans before the Australian Open we knew the decision was pretty much out of my hands.
"If I'd waited any longer it would have been similar to 2008 where I prolonged it and ended up missing the US Open.
"As it is I'll be back and ready for the French Open."

am hoping that federer makes a full recovery and plays with agassi, sampras and rafa,so crossing everything that happens.

Too bad Roger might be out of IW but a healthy RF ( and Rafa)is needed on tour right now. Dubai is looking rather dismal with Murray playing like a dish rag, Djokovic uninspired and Tsonga wanting to be anywhere but on the court.Even davydenko was eh! Maybe the player's party tonight will inspire them.

Although Lukas Lacko just put in a great effort against Youzhny ... even if he did lose.
