Julien Benneteau will move into an all-French final against Michael Llodra with his upset victory over countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals.
France’s Julien Benneteau won a marathon 3 hour match over fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in front of the home crowd in Marseille on Saturday.
Benneteau, ranked 39 in the world, put together a nervy couple of tiebreaks to upset the No. 2 seed in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The first set was about as closely played as a set can be. Total points win the set were 49 for Benneteau – and 50 for Tsonga. The two men traded breaks of serve just once to force what ended up being the tiebreaker of the tournament. Benenteau held the resolve that has so often deserted him in his career to finally take the lead with a 13-11 scoreline.
The second set was decidedly messier than the first. There were 4 service games leading into the tail-end of the set. With another tiebreaker imminent, Benneteau surrendered a service break and Tsonga snagged the set and leveled the match.
Neither player was able to secure a service break in the third set. The crowd was treated to yet another tiebreak, but a flagging Tsonga was outplayed soundly by Benneteau. The upset win sends the world No. 39 into the final against Michael Llodra.
