Julien Benneteau upset countryman Gael Monfils to earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinal. Joining Benneteau on Saturday is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Julien Benneteau def. Gael Monfils 6-3, 7-5
In the battle of the Frenchmen, Julien Benneteau took advantage of poor tactics from Gael Monfils to pull off the upset win. Monfils played defensive, retrieving tennis on a fast hard court against a big hitter – a strategy that is rarely effective. Benneteau sent the No. 3 seed scrambling well behind the baseline throughout the opening set. An early break of serve for Benneteau sealed the lead for him.
Monfils had what appeared to be a comeback in the second set. The world No. 13 served to level the match at 5-3 and he even had a set point after throwing in a service winner. It was not to be. Benneteau broke back for 5-4 and then broke again at 5-5 to earn a chance to serve out the match – which he did successfully. Benneteau will take on countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Illya Marchenko
In the most predictable of the 4 quarterfinal matches, France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took out Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine. Tsonga converted 1 of 4 break point chances in the opening set, but he did not even face a break point himself. With the lead firmly in hand, the Frenchman appeared poised to sprint through the second set – Marchenko made things a bit complicated for Tsonga, however. The Frenchman got a bit sloppy in the second set and he gave up a service break.
Fortunately for the French fans, Tsonga got the job done at the right moment. He secured 2 breaks of serve from Marchenko to close out the match in straight sets.
