  • Karlovic sets up giant showdown with Isner

    2/19/10 1:39 AM | Ricky Dimon
Karlovic sets up giant showdown with Isner Ivo Karlovic overpowers Xavier Malisse in straight sets on Thursday and will face fellow big man John Isner in the Memphis quarterfinals. Sam Querrey also advances with a routine win over Leonardo Mayer.

    Ivo Karlovic d. Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-4

Karlovic used one break in each set to race past Malisse in the second round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Thursday afternoon. The 6'10'' Croat needed just one hour and 10 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash with 6'9'' American John Isner. Karlovic saved one break point in the opening frame of the match and did not face another one the entire rest of the way. Malisse managed to hold his own serve until 4-5, when he suddenly got broken to lose the opening frame of play.

The 29-year-old Belgian was completely helpless against his opponent's serve in set two, winning just four points in five return games. He did well to fend off three break points at 3-4, but he once again buckled under the pressure while serving to stay in the set. Karlovic converted his first match point when a Malisse forehand clipped the tape and fell on his own side of the net. After firing 18 aces and winning 32 of 36 first-serve points, Karlovic booked a second career meeting with Isner. The world No. 33 took down Isner 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4 in their previous encounter at the Pilot Pen tournament two years ago.

    (8) Sam Querrey d. Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-0

One day after beating Mardy Fish 6-4, 6-0, Mayer had the tables turned on him and he fell by the same score to Querrey. The 6'6'' American needed just one hour and one minute to book a quarterfinal spot alongside either Yen-Hsun Lu or--most likely--No. 1 seed Andy Roddick. Mayer dug out of a 0-40 hole at 3-4 in the first set to hold serve, but he could not stand up to the same pressure at 4-5. Down set point at 15-40, the 22-year-old Argentine sprayed a wild forehand for the first break of the match.

From there it was full steam ahead for Querrey in the second frame of play. Memphis' No. 8 seed broke in the second, fourth, and sixth games of set two without facing any break points of his own. As Mayer crumbled, Querrey got better and better as the match progressed and dominated baseline play with huge forehands. Querrey finished with eight aces and three double-faults while winning 29 of 32 first-serve points.
