Josselin Ouanna put up quite a tussle against countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Marseille on Wednesday.
No. 2 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was given a stern test in his first match in Marseille. Fellow Frenchman Josselin Ouanna just would not go away, especially in the opening set.
Ouanna is ranked 121 in the world, mostly a Challenger court player, but he hung with the No. 9 Tsonga for most of the match. Tsonga was able to hold serve with ease in the opening set. The No. 2 seed did not even face a break point – the problem was that he could not secure a break of serve either.
The tiebreaker was another battle of serves. Tsonga could not manage to gain the final advantage and capitalize on it until 11-9 in the breaker.
The second set offered more of the same from both players. Tsonga continued to serve well through the second set. Once again he faced no break points – the difference between the first and second sets was that Tsonga converted on one of the three break points he earned.
Tsonga will face the winner of Olivier Rochus and Illya Marchenko in the quarterfinals.
