Brasil Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero continued his winning ways on Wednesday, leveling the head-to-head series with Marcos Daniel at one match-win apiece. The second seed eased into the Buenos Aires final eight, following his 6-2, 6-4 dismissal of the Brazilian. With the round of 16 victory, Ferrero successfully extended his clay-court, match-win streak to seven.
Ferrero took a 3-0 lead in the opener, compiling a double-break lead in less than 10 minutes. The Spaniard completed the match without facing break-point, sealing the win at the one-hour and 16-minute mark. Ferrero held nine of 9 service games, while keeping Daniel to just 7 points on the return of serve.
The second seed will take on countryman Santiago Ventura for a place in the semifinal. The qualifier ousted seventh seed Victor Hanescu early Wednesday, 6-4, 7-6.
David Nalbandian def. Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-7, 6-4, 7-6
Hometown hope David Nalbandian, visibly struggling with a right leg injury, fought his way to a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver Wednesday evening. The former Copa Telmex champion missed three match point opportunities before securing the victory in two hours and 47 minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Nalbandian held an early edge in the third. The Argentine led 2-0, aided by two consecutive doubles from the Spaniard. Nalbandian reached 5-3, but turned in an errant backhand on break point to drop serve. A second-set tie-break contained several shifts in momentum, as the Argentine gave away critical points at 3-1 and 6-5. Nalbandian regrouped to collect his fourth match point at 8-7, ending the evening with a heavy forehand.
He moves on to face fifth seed Albert Montanes in the quarterfinal. The Spaniard recorded a 6-3, 6-2, 67-minute win over qualifier Pablo Andujar in the round of 16.
