  • Verdasco runs out of gas, loses to Chardy

Verdasco runs out of gas, loses to Chardy Two days after winning the SAP Open title over Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco struggles in Memphis and drops his opener to Jeremy Chardy. Next up for Chardy is an all-unseeded affair with Lukas Lacko.

Playing two days after capturing his fourth ATP title turned out to be too much to ask of Fernando Verdasco.

The 11th-ranked Spaniard, who upset Andy Roddick on Sunday in the SAP Open final, succumbed to Jeremy Chardy 7-6(4), 6-3 in the first round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Tuesday night. Chardy needed just one hour and 15 minutes to set up a second-round clash against Lukas Lacko.

Although he did not have to save a single break point the entire way, Chardy missed his only opportunity in the first set so he was forced into a tiebreaker. The 41st-ranked Frenchman donated a mini-break at 1-1 and eventually fell behind 3-1, but he got the mini-break back for 3-3, struck again for 5-4, and took care of his next two service points to pocket the set.

Verdasco, clearly unable to regain the form that enjoyed in San Jose, could not recover in the second. A break to Chardy midway through set two all but sealed the deal. Verdasco even faced a match point while serving at 2-5, but he won three straight points to put the pressure on Chardy. With no trouble whatsoever, the underdog served out the proceedings to score what should hold up as the biggest upset of the tournament.

Chardy finished with six double-faults, but he fired seven aces and won a stellar 35 of 40 first-serve points. Verdasco, the No. 2 seed in Memphis, wrapped up his effort with eight aces and four double-faults.
