Nalbandian makes successful return in Buenos Aires David Nalbandian recorded his first win since May of last year, downing Potito Starace in straight sets at the Copa Telmex Tuesday afternoon. The former champion is through to the round of 16.

David Nalbandian def. Potito Starace 6-2, 7-6(2)

Former world No. 3 David Nalbandian captured his first ATP World Tour victory in 10 months, after defeating first-round opponent Potito Starace, 6-2, 7-6(2). The Argentine needed to complete the opening round over two days, as inclement weather halted play Monday evening. With the win, Nalbandian extended his head-to-head series lead to 3-0 over Starace.

Nalbandian led 4-0 in the first set, helped by a handful of forehand errors from Starace. The Italian recovered a break at 4-1, but quickly dropped serve in the following game. The Argentine had troubles of his own on serve, as he failed to close at 5-1. Nalbandian regrouped to hold set point in the eighth game, finishing on a backhand return winner off a weak second serve.

An even second set would end in a tie-break, with the first two points going Starace’s way. After trailing 2-0, Nalbandian played more aggressively to capture six consecutive points. The Argentine converted his first match point, ending the match with a sharp volley at the one-hour and 41-minute mark.

Nalbandian moves on to face Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the second round. The Spaniard rallied to oust third-seeded countryman Nicolas Almagro, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 on Monday.

    (8) Horacio Zeballos def. (WC) Gaston Gaudio 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

Eighth seed Horacio Zeballos earned his first win of the season Tuesday afternoon, outlasting compatriot and former Copa Telmex champion Gaston Gaudio in three sets. Zeballos struck eight aces and saved five of 6 break points en route to the first-round victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

After splitting the first two sets, Zeballos hit a return of serve winner to break at 3-2. The 24-year-old, passing through the third without facing break-point, reached match point at 5-3. An errant forehand from Gaudio sealed the win for Zeballos in an hour and 57 minutes.

Zeballos will take on veteran Carlos Moya in the round of 16. The wildcard Spaniard took out qualifier Filippo Volandri early Tuesday, 6-2, 7-5.
