Fellow seeds David Ferrer and Juan Monaco are through to the second round of play in Buenos Aires. Both players posted a victory in straight sets Tuesday night.
(1) David Ferrer def. Simon Greul 6-2, 7-6(3)
Top seed David Ferrer advanced to the second round on Tuesday, following his 6-2, 7-6(3) dismissal of Simon Greul. The Spaniard pocketed his second clay-court win over the German and extended his head-to-head series advantage to 3-0.
Ferrer started the match quickly, taking a 2-0 lead after a net cord sent a Greul forehand wide on break point. The 27-year-old needed less than 20 minutes to build a 5-1 edge, aided by a slow start from the German. Ferrer did not face a break point during the opener, eventually closing the 6-2 set on a missed return from Greul.
A more competitive second set followed, with both men snagging three service breaks apiece. Ferrer saved set-point at 5-6 to force a tie-break. An even breaker turned in favor of the Spaniard at 4-3. Trademark defending allowed Ferrer to take both service points from Greul, earning him triple match-point at 6-3. A missed backhand from the German sealed the victory for the top seed in one hour and 42 minutes.
Ferrer will take on Frederico Gil for a place in the quarterfinal. Gil took out Australian Peter Luczak on Monday, 6-2, 6-4.
(4) Juan Monaco def. Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 7-6(1)
Former Buenos Aires champion Juan Monaco passed through his opening-round match without facing break-point, downing Brasil Open finalist Lukasz Kubot in straight sets. The fourth-seeded Argentine held 11 of 11 service games en route to notching the 6-4, 7-6(1) win in 95 minutes.
Monaco pocketed the only break of the match at 2-2, courtesy of a missed forehand from Kubot. Two set points followed in short order at 5-4, with Monaco capping off the set on a backhand winner. The Argentine ran away with the second-set tie-break, compiling a 5-1 lead as Kubot sprayed groundstroke errors. The 25-year-old went on to lose only one point in the breaker, as he finished the night with a forehand winner.
Monaco meets fellow Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in the round of 16. The veteran took out Richard Gasquet opening round, 7-6, 7-5.
