  • Isner, Stepanek advance in Memphis

    2/16/10 5:30 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner, Stepanek advance in Memphis John Isner and Radek Stepanek book their places in the Memphis second round on Monday. Philipp Petzschner also pulls out a win, beating Taylor Dent in three sets.

    (6) John Isner d. (Q) Ryan Harrison 6-1, 7-5

Isner put on a dominant display of serving to beat Harrison in just one hour and two minutes on Monday night at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. The 6'9'' American fired eight aces and lost a mere eight points in nine service games to set up a second-round meeting with either Jarkko Nieminen or Dudi Sela. Playing in just his fifth career ATP match, the 17-year-old Harrison came out flat and was completely overwhelmed in the first set. Three breaks were more than enough for Isner to take the opening frame of play and also allowed him to start the second with serve. Harrison raised his level and hung in there throughout the second, but Isner converted his first break chance--and first match point--with his opponent serving to stay in the proceedings at 5-6.

    (3) Radek Stepanek d. (Q) Kevin Anderson 7-5, 4-6, 6-4

Anderson blasted 15 aces and no double-faults against Stepanek on Monday afternoon, but it was not enough to score a first-round upset in Memphis. Stepanek set up a second-round meeting with either Ernests Gulbis or Robert Kendrick after two hours and two minutes. The 31-year-old Czech gave back an early break in the first set, but he broke Anderson again at 5-5 before serving it out with ease. Anderson stayed within striking distance by saving a break point in the first game of set two, and the 6'8'' South African soon broke at 4-4 before closing forcing a final frame of play with a routine hold at 5-4. When he got broken at 1-1 in the second, however, it was all over. Stepanek consolidated the break by winning an amazing 20 of 21 service points in the third set. This week's No. 3 seed, who was runner-up last year, finished with six aces and two double-faults.

    Philipp Petzschner d. Taylor Dent 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

In an extremely swift three-setter, Petzschner posted a comeback win over Dent after just one hour and 24 minutes. Dent raced through the opening frame of play losing only six points in four service games, but the rest of the match was a completely different story. The American's serve collapsed and his aggressive chip-and-charges off the Petzschner second offering no longer worked to perfection. Petzschner capitalized on 37 percent serving by Dent in set two to seize one break, and that was enough for him to force a third. Although the 70th-ranked German continued to get better and better as the match went on, set three was really only decided by a few points. Petzschner converted his only break chance and saved Dent's lone break point before serving out the match at 5-4. He will meet either Evgeny Korolev or seventh-seeded countryman Philipp Kohlschreiber in round two.
