Marcos Baghdatis wasted no time making his way into the second round with a straight set victory over Daniel Brands of Germany.
Marcos Baghdatis has often played well in Marseille. The Cypriot advanced to the finals back in 2007 and he was a semifinalist in 2008. He continued his winning ways on Monday.
Germany’s Daniel Brands did not offer much resistance to Baghdatis. The German sits at No. 96 in the world and he has had a dismal start to the 2010 season. Coming into Rotterdam, Brands had suffered four straight first-round defeats – Marseille makes five.
Baghdatis only faced one break point in the match, a single chance Brands had in the opening set. Otherwise, the Cypriot was rock-solid on serve. He put in a healthy 68% of first serves in, and he struck 4 aces in the match.
Brands was not nearly as effective on serve. He gave Baghdatis seven hances to break serve and the Cypriot converted three of them.
Baghdatis awaits the winner of Michael Llodra and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, two Frenchmen, in the second round.
