Fernando Verdasco snapped a seven-match losing streak against Andy Roddick Sunday afternoon, rallying to capture the SAP Open title in three sets. The Spaniard won his fourth ATP World Tour crown.
Second seed Fernando Verdasco snagged his first title of the season on Sunday, ousting three-time champion and top seed Andy Roddick. The 26-year-old came back from a set down to notch the victory in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Prior to the SAP Open finals clash, Verdasco had trailed Roddick 9-2 in the head-to-head, having lost seven consecutive matches since their 2005 meeting in Rome. Sunday’s triumph marks the second hard-court title for the Spaniard, adding to his 2009 success in New Haven.
Roddick took the first break after a long rally at 1-1, forcing Verdasco into a backhand error. The American, saving three of three break-point chances, controlled most of the baseline exchanges in the opener. The Spaniard had a chance to level after collecting triple break-point in the eighth game, but failed to convert. Roddick regained the advantage to hold set-point at 5-3. A backhand miss gave the three-time champion a one-set lead in 45 minutes.
Verdasco began to increase his effort in set two, earning three break-point opportunities at 1-1. Roddick struck a backhand wide, unable to handle the pace of the Verdasco forehand. The Spaniard fought to consolidate, wiping away four break-points to reach 3-1. After missing a chance to snag an insurance break in the ninth game, Verdasco pocketed double set-point at 5-4. The second seed won the 6-4 set with his 11th ace of the match.
A closely contested third set contained no break-point openings for either player until 4-4. Still hitting the ball cleanly, Verdasco drew a critical volley error from Roddick. The Spaniard quickly passed through to championship point at 5-4, sealing the title-winning run on his 15th ace.
Roddick and Verdasco, returning to hard-court competition next week, will both continue on to the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis.

It was nice to see Verdasco hold his nerves in check at the end. After the first set, he pretty much played an error-free match. I wondered, considering his h2h record against Roddick was so poor...if you saw, he was serving bombs all day long too. Like playing on ice in San Jose lol.

He was a little tense in the beginning- 30-30. He didn't seem bothered though, and the last ace was a bomb. Roddick had no chance to get it back.
