Andy Roddick will look to go one step further in Memphis than he did in San Jose, and if he does, he will successfully defend his Memphis title. Roddick will be challenged by a strong field that includes Fernando Verdasco and Radek Stepanek.
After contesting the San Jose title match as the top two seeds in that tournament, Andy Roddick and Fernando Verdasco are once again seeded first and second, this time in Memphis. While Verdasco got the best of Roddick on Sunday, Roddick has to feeling good about a return to the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, where he triumphed last year over Radek Stepanek.
The draw however, did not exactly give Roddick much of a break. Following two days of rest, the world No. 7 will open against fellow American James Blake. Although Blake has been slumping, he showed signs of life at the Australian Open and he is on a surprising three-match winning streak against Roddick.
Also looming large in Roddick's half of the draw are Stepanek, Tomas Berdych, and Sam Querrey. America's top-ranked player faced both Berdych and Querrey in San Jose; beating Berdych in a two-tiebreaker quarterfinal and surviving Querrey in a semifinal that went to a third-set 'breaker. This time Roddick could face Querrey in the quarters and Berdych in the semis.
Verdasco will get only one day off before kicking off his Memphis debut on Tuesday night. The Spaniard's section of the draw is not as difficult as the relative chaos in the top half, but he will open against talented Frenchman Jeremy Chardy and--should he advance three rounds--could meet either John Isner or Tommy Haas on semifinal Saturday.
Unseeded threats in the draw are plentiful. Mardy Fish, Ivo Karlovic, Ernests Gulbis, Evgeny Korolev, and Taylor Dent have the potential to be dangerous, especially on indoor hard courts. Karlovic is on course to meet Haas in round two before a potential all-giant quarterfinal showdown with Isner.
