  • Ferrer, Ferrero headline clay-court competition in Buenos Aires

Ferrer, Ferrero headline clay-court competition in Buenos Aires The South American clay-court swing makes a third stop this week, as David Ferrer and Juan Carlos Ferrero top the field of players at the Copa Telmex in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Clay-court action continues during the third week of February as a stellar pool of entrants travel to the Copa Telmex. A talent-flush collection of 32 players will battle for the championship trophy in Buenos Aires as first-round competition commences Monday afternoon.

Reigning Buenos Aires champion Tommy Robredo elected not to defend his title, leaving former World No. 4 David Ferrer to lead the group of combatants. The 27-year-old begins the week with a 4-3 season record, bolstered by a run to the final four in Johannesburg (lost to Robert). The Valencia native will take part in his first Copa Telmex since 2005, where he suffered a first-round loss to compatriot Alberto Martin.

Ferrer is joined by countryman and 2010 Brasil Open winner, Juan Carlos Ferrero. The former World No. 1 kicks off his fourth outing in Buenos Aires as the second seed. The 2003 French Open champion looks to collect clay-court crown No. 11, adding to his recent success at Costa Do Sauipe (def. Kubot).

Nicolas Almagro, 2007 Copa Telmex champion Juan Monaco, Albert Montanes, Igor Andreev, Victor Hanescu and Horacio Zeballos round out the list of seeded players.

Other competitors include 2008 Buenos Aires winner David Nalbandian, Brasil Open finalist Lukasz Kubot, and former world No. 7 Richard Gasquet. Alongside Ferrero, the field contains two additional former French Open champions in wildcard recipients Gaston Gaudio and Carlos Moya. Both players have captured top honors in Buenos Aires as well, the former in 2005 and the latter in 2006.

Former champion Nalbandian makes his return to the ATP World Tour following a nine-month recovery period from hip surgery. The 2008 Copa Telmex title-winner was scheduled to participate at the Australian Open, but withdrew after sustaining an abdominal injury. Nalbandian enters into his seventh Buenos Aires tournament ranked 140th in the world.
