  • SAP Open - Roddick sets up finals meeting with Verdasco

SAP Open - Roddick sets up finals meeting with Verdasco Andy Roddick advanced to his second final of the season, rallying to knock out Sam Querrey late Saturday. The three-time champion moves through to battle second seed Fernando Verdasco for the SAP Open title.

Although outplayed for the better part of two hours, top seed Andy Roddick called upon his experience and big serve to outlast seventh-seeded compatriot Sam Querrey Saturday night. The 27-year-old American withstood 32 aces from the Querrey racquet, digging his way back from a 6-2 first-set loss to record a victory in two hours of play. With the 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) semifinal win, Roddick extended his series lead to 4-1 over Querrey.

Querrey began the match quickly, earning a 4-1, double-break lead with help from a handful of heavy forehand strikes. Roddick fell behind in most of the baseline rallies, unable to handle the pace of the Querrey ground game. The 22-year-old sealed the 6-2, 23-minute opening set after Roddick missed a return of serve.

Both men held six of six service games without facing break point in set two. Roddick took a 4-3 lead in the ensuing tie-break, capitalizing on a sloppy backhand pass from Querrey. The world No. 7 collected triple set-point at 6-3, leveling the match on an unreturnable serve.

Two clutch aces from Roddick saved double break-point at 0-1 in the third. No additional break points were created, as the players reached a tie-break at six games apiece. After snagging a 4-3 advantage, Querrey played two loose points to trail 4-5. A steadier Roddick booked a finals berth at the two-hour mark, courtesy of a drop-volley on match point.

The top seed ended the night with 21 aces and 57 of 69 points won on first-serve.

Roddick will square off against Fernando Verdasco in the championship match on Sunday. The second-seeded Spaniard defeated semifinal opponent Denis Istomin 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 on Saturday afternoon.
