  • Kubot continues wild week, upsets Andreev

Kubot continues wild week, upsets Andreev Lukasz Kubot is through to the Costa do Sauipe final after winning his third singles match in two days, beating Igor Andreev on Saturday. Next up for Kubot is either Juan Carlos Ferrero or Ricardo Mello.

There might be no stopping Lukasz Kubot this week.

One day after winning three matches (two singles and one doubles), Kubot kept up his remarkable hot streak in Costa do Sauipe with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Igor Andreev on Saturday evening. Kubot needed one hour and 53 minutes to set up a final showdown with either top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero or wild card Ricardo Mello.

With more experience in the latter stages of ATP tournaments, Andreev was the one who came out in blistering form. The 41st-ranked Russian served well and continually kept his opponent pinned at the baseline. Two breaks were more than enough for Andreev to seize a one-set advantage.

In the second frame of play, however, Kubot began to impose his will on Andreev by playing aggressive tennis and getting into the net behind well-placed approach shots. The unseeded Pole lost a mere five points in four return games and his second break of the day at 5-2 finished off the set in style.

Andreev regained the momentum with an early break in the third, but he gave it away while serving at 3-2. From there Kubot could simply could do no wrong. The world No. 56 started to pummel Andreev with flat groundstrokes en route to a 5-4 lead. Serving to stay in the match, Andreev played near-perfect tennis; only it was not good enough. Costa do Sauipe's No. 4 seed saved one match point following a huge Kubot forehand at 15-30, but Kubot converted his next chance, responding to an Andreev pass with a shocking drop-shot volley winner.

Kubot finished with nine aces and two double-faults on the way to his second career ATP final. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2009 Belgrade title match, also on clay.
