Juan Carlos Ferrero beats Ricardo Mello in straight sets on Saturday night to reach the Costa do Sauipe final. Ferrero and Mello will soon meet again in the Buenos Aires first round.
Juan Carlos Ferrero sprinted into the final of the Brasil Open on Saturday night, dismissing underdog and crowd favorite Ricardo Mello 6-4, 6-2. Ferrero set up a clash in the title match with Lukasz Kubot after just one hour and 13 minutes.
The two competitors exchanged a pair of breaks early before Ferrero seized complete control. A second break allowed the 30-year-old Spaniard to serve out the first set at 5-4, which he did at love thanks mostly to a flurry of Mello errors.
With the Brazilian fans not wanting their wild card entrant to go away quietly, Mello did well to stay within striking distance by saving a break point in the opening game of set two. The world No. 35, however, surrendered his next two service games to fall into a crippling 4-1 hole. Mello fought back to break for 2-4, but Ferrero took the next two games with ease. Costa do Sauipe's No. 1 seed clinched victory on his first match point at 5-2 with a forehand winner.
Ferrero finished with five aces and no double-faults while serving at 77 percent. He saved none of the two break points he faced, but he more than made up for it by converting five of his eight opportunities. Through to his 30th career ATP final, Ferrero will be facing Kubot for the first time in their veteran careers. Kubot will be contesting his second ATP title match.
Ironically, the Buenos Aires draw was unveiled today and Ferrero and Mello will be meeting again in the very first round. Mello got a special exemption into that tournament by reaching the Brasil Open semis.
