Juan Carlos Ferrero eases past Carlos Berlocq in the Brasil Open quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. Igor Andreev also rolls into the semis with a straight-set victory over Pablo Cuevas.
(1) Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. (Q) Carlos Berlocq
Ferrero needed one hour and 29 minutes to defeat Berlocq in the quarterfinals of the Brasil Open on Friday. The 30-year-old Spaniard, who celebrated his birthday with the win, had a difficult time with Nicolas Massu on Wednesday but he had no such trouble against Berlocq. Ferrero surrendered his own serve once in the first set, but his third break of the afternoon finished off the opening frame of play in style.
Costa do Sauipe's No. 1 seed sustained the momentum with ease early in set two. He broke serve easily in the second game of the set and then held for a commanding 3-0 advantage. Berlocq had visions of getting back on serve, but the 295th-ranked Argentine missed three break chances at 2-4 and could not recover. Ferrero capitalized on his second match point at 5-2 with a well-placed forehand passing shot. Berlocq served at just 56 pecent and won only 38 percent of his second-serve points to end his impressive week in Brazil. Ferrero moves on to face one of two Brazilians; either third-seeded Thomaz Bellucci or wild card Ricardo Mello.
(4) Igor Andreev d. (6) Pablo Cuevas 6-1, 6-1
Andreev destroyed Cuevas in just 55 minutes on Friday afternoon, setting up a semifinal showdown with either Lukasz Kubot or Fabio Fognini. The 41st-ranked Russian struck eight aces and won an amazing 23 of 24 first-serve points, completely overwhelming Cuevas in every facet of the game. Cuevas, meanwhile, won just 40 percent of both his first and second-serve points and he saved only one of six break points.
Taking control right from the start with his heavy topspin forehand, Andreev pummeled his 50th-ranked opponent from the baseline and jumped out to a huge lead before serving out the first set at 5-1. Cuevas could not recover in the second frame of play and the Argentine went away without almost no fight whatsoever. Andreev's final break of the day at 5-1 finished off the dominant performance in style. Costa do Sauipe's No. 4 seed is 0-2 lifetime against Kubot and 1-0 against Fognini, having survived the Italian in five sets at last year's French Open.
