Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko moved into the Rotterdam quarterfinals with an impressive straight-set victory over in-form Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.
Nikolay Davydenko def. Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 6-2
No. 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko faced an imposing second-round opponent in the form of Marcos Baghdatis. The Cypriot has been racing back up the rankings (he sits at No. 36 at the moment) and he has 3 tournament wins in the past six months to show for his efforts. As good as he has been though, he had answers for Davydenko on Thursday.
The Russian racked up five service breaks against Baghdatis, three of which occurred in the opening set. Davydenko did not serve particularly well (one ace and 51% first serves in for the match), but that did not affect that outcome of the match at all. Davydenko was able to dominate Baghdatis from the baseline from the first point to the last. Davydenko will face Austria’s Jurgen Melzer in the quarterfinals.
Mikhail Youzhny def. Marsel Ilhan 6-4, 6-4
Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny had a scare in the opening round in Rotterdam. Andrey Golubev took the opening set from the Russian 6-1, and forced the second and third sets to tiebreakers. He put on a much better display in the second round against Marsel Ilhan of Turkey.
Youzhny was not broken in the match. He fought off the three break points against him and managed to secure a single break of Ilhan’s serve in each set to get the straight set victory. Youzhny faces No. 4 seed Gael Monfils of France in the quarterfinals.
