  • Bellucci cruises, Kubot upsets Montanes at Brasil Open

    2/12/10 7:39 PM | Ricky Dimon
Bellucci cruises, Kubot upsets Montanes at Brasil Open Thomaz Bellucci wins his seventh straight match on Friday afternoon, dismissing Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets. Lukasz Kubot also advances with an upset of No. 2 seed Albert Montanes.

    (3) Thomaz Bellucci d. Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4, 6-2

Few Brazilian fans were there to enjoy it, but Bellucci kept up his hot streak and rolled over Gimeno-Traver in one hour and 19 minutes. Costa do Sauipe's No. 3 seed and crowd favorite recorded with four aces and one double-fault while winning at least 73 percent of both his first and second-serve points. The match was pushed back from Thursday night to Friday afternoon as a result of rain, so Bellucci will contest his quarterfinal match later on Friday against No. 5 seed Victor Hanescu or wild card Ricardo Mello.

Gimeno-Traver failed to muster up much of a fight against his in-form opponent. The 81st-ranked Spaniard surrendered his serve at 1-1 in the opening set and won only four points in five return games. After serving out the first frame of play at 5-4, Bellucci broke immediately and lost only one point in the first two games of the second. The 28th-ranked Brazilian saved five break points in set two--including two at 5-2--before finishing off the match with a perfect serve-and-volley combination.

    Lukasz Kubot d. (2) Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-2

Maintaining his fine form following a fourth-round showing at the Australian Open, Kubot surprised Montanes in one hour and 23 minutes on Friday afternoon. The 27-year-old Pole served at just 48 percent in the opening set, but he won 13 of 14 first-serve points and never faced a break point. Two breaks of his own, therefore, were easily enough for Kubot to seize a one-set advantage.

After breaking to finish off the set in style, the world No. 56 broke right away at love for a quick 1-0 lead in the second. Montanes did everything he could to get back on serve, but he squandered all three of his break chances. Serving to stay in the tournament at 2-5, the 30th-ranked Spaniard saved two match points before double-faulting at 30-40. Next up for Kubot on Friday is either Marcel Granollers or Fabio Fognini, both of whom are also unseeded.
