    (1) Andy Roddick def. (Q) Ryler DeHeart 6-1, 7-6(1)

Top seed Andy Roddick is through to the round of 16, following his straight-set defeat of countryman Ryler DeHeart. The three-time SAP Open champion needed just 67 minutes to knock out the qualifier 6-1, 7-6(1) on Wednesday evening. After winning the 6-1 opening set in 23 minutes, Roddick trailed 0-3 in the second. The 27-year-old recovered the service break at 3-5, aided by a forehand miss from DeHeart. A second-set tie-break went Roddick’s way, as the top seed jumped out to a 4-0 advantage. A forehand pass at 6-1 sealed the win for the top seed, who struck 11 aces during the match.

Roddick moves ahead to battle Leonardo Mayer in the second round. The Argentine downed Ernests Gulbis in the opening round on Monday, 7-5, 6-4.

    (2) Fernando Verdasco def. Yen-Hsun Lu 6-3, 6-7, 6-3

Fernando Verdasco battled through a difficult first-round encounter with Yen-Hsun Lu Wednesday night to reach the round of 16. The second seed overcame a lackluster second set before downing his opponent, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. After splitting the first two sets, Verdasco gained a 3-0 advantage in the third as Lu missed a routine forehand. The Spaniard, who held five of five service games in the final set, collected double match-point at 5-3. An unreturnable serve capped off the victory for Verdasco just shy of the two-hour mark.

Verdasco struck 14 aces and converted four of eight break-point opportunities during the match.

He will take on Benjamin Becker for a spot in the quarterfinal. The German beat qualifier Tim Smyczek in the first round, 6-4, 6-2.
