  • Djokovic makes quick work of Chiudinelli

Djokovic makes quick work of Chiudinelli Rotterdam No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic breezed into the semifinals with a straight-set victory over Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli.

Novak Djokovic def. Marco Chiudinelli 6-4, 6-2

There was a spark of interest for this second-round match, as Chiudinelli took a set from world No. 2 Novak Djokovic just a few weeks ago at the Australian Open. The Serb quickly extinguished hopes of a close re-match on Thursday with a straightforward two-set beatdown of the Swiss. The first set was not even as closely contested as the score indicates.

Djokovic went neatly about the business of holding serve throughout the set. He never faced a break point. Chiudinelli, conversely, faced six break points. The set was only close because the Swiss managed to stave off Djokovic on five of his six tries.

The second set played similarly to the first. Djokovic dominated from the baseline on his own serve and he had eight chances to break Chiudinelli’s serve. The only difference was that the Serb converted twice in the second set for a tidy 6-2 scoreline. Djokovic was to play Florian Mayer in the quarterfinals, but the German withdrew from the tournament, giving Djokovic safe passage to the semifinals.

Gael Monfils def. Thiemo De Bakker 6-3, 6-2

France’s Gael Monfils was all over Dutch wildcard Thiemo De Bakker’s serve immediately. Monfils has a whole host of break point chances in the first set, but he converted just one time in eight tries. De Bakker’s serve let him down in the match making him easy prey for a quality returner like Monfils. The Dutchman struck just two aces in the match, a dismal number given the speed of the court.

Monfils took a double-break lead in the second set and finished the match in an hour and a quarter. The Frenchman will meet Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny in the quarterfinals.

what do you mean stu, if someone has been looking impressive in this tournament so far it's davydenko. djokovic got a very lucky draw

croc , 2/11/10 10:20 PM

yes croc, this wasnt about davydenko at all. i havent been watching the tournament so i dont know who is playing well and who isnt. it is just in ref. to the other thread where people are talking about djokovic being "gifted" 500 points for rotterdam. i meant, by my last post, that davy is his only hurdle and if he doesnt beat him we will never hear the end of it...
