  • Ferrero advances to Costa do Sauipe second round

    2/10/10 2:36 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrero advances to Costa do Sauipe second round No. 1 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero takes care of Eduardo Schwank in the Costa do Sauipe opening round on Tuesday evening. Igor Andreev also advances, dispatching Potito Starace in straight sets.

Juan Carlos Ferrero survived a difficult start to defeat Eduardo Schwank 7-6(4), 6-3 in the first round of the Brasil Open on Tuesday. Ferrero raised his level throughout the match to set up a showdown with fellow veteran Nicolas Massu after two hours and six minutes.

It was Schwank who controlled most of the opening set, but the 74th-ranked Argentine could not capitalize on his opportunities. Ferrero saved all seven of the break points he faced during the first frame of play, including a comeback from 0-40 down at 4-4. Schwank soon seized a 3-1 lead in the tiebreaker, but Ferrero ran off six straight points to all but clinch the 'breaker.

The top-seeded Spaniard maintained his momentum by earning a 2-0 advantage in the second, but he gave the break right back while serving at 2-1. Schwank, however, was absolutely woeful on serve throughout set two. He put in just 44 percent of his first deliveries, won less than 40 percent of his first-serve points, and lost four of five service games. Ferrero's fourth break of the evening at 5-3 finished off the proceedings in style.

Ferrer fired no aces, but he saved nine of 11 break points on the way to a ninth career matchup against Massu, who knocked out Brazilian qualifier Rogerio Dutra Da Silva in three sets.

Igor Andreev advanced to the second round earlier on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 rout of Potito Starace. The fourth-seeded Russian needed just one hour and three minutes to set up a meeting with Portuguese qualifier Rui Machado.

Andreev won 10 of 12 first-serve points in the opening set and saved all three of the break points he faced, so two breaks were more than enough for him to take a one-set advantage. The world No. 41 was even more dominant throughout a second frame of play in which he lost only four points in four service games. Starace earned one of his four service holds at 1-5 to stay alive, but Andreev served out the proceedings one game later, converting his first match point.

Andreev struck six aces and three double-faults on the way to his first match victory of the season.

I hope Juan Carlos Ferrero does really well in South America, he is playing in 3 tournaments there. through out his career he has been dodged by illness, chicken pox etc, loads of injuries, and deserves some luck, after injury last year he climbed his way back from 115 in the rankings to 22 now, I think it was great of Tim Henman who advised the Wimbledon board to give Juan Carlos a wild card last year, and proved to be right as he reached the quarter final again, a former world no'1 i hope he has some ggod results this year, after his dismal start in New Zealand and Australia, suffering yet another injury, this time his ankle;; GOOD LUCK JC
