Thomaz Bellucci wins his sixth straight match on Tuesday night in Costa do Sauipe, dispatching Thiago Alves in straight sets. Bellucci is jouned in the second round by Marcel Granollers and Lukasz Kubot.
(3) Thomaz Bellucci d. (WC) Thiago Alves 6-2, 7-5
Coming off his second career ATP title last week in Santiago, Bellucci kept up his fine form on Tuesday with a straight-set win over Alves in the first round of the Brasil Open. Bellucci surrendered serve once in the first set, but he was brutal in baseline rallies especially when he was able to take control of points early. The 28th-ranked Brazilian won nine of 11 second-serve return point in the first set to earn three service breaks. Bellucci gave back an early break in the second, but he struck again at 5-5 before closing out the match without any trouble. Costa do Sauipe's No. 3 seed fired 10 aces past his countryman on the way to a second-round encounter against Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Marcel Granollers d. (7) Horacio Zeballos 7-5, 3-0, retired
After a tense first set, Granollers was pulling away from Zeballos early in set two when the Argentine retired due to a left hip injury. Two breaks were exchanged in the opening frame of play before Granollers took a 6-5 lead and survived an extremely difficult service game to close it out for 7-5. With his opponent clearly struggling, the 23-year-old Spaniard won 14 of 18 points over the next three games until Zeballos called it quits after one hour and 18 minutes. Granollers blasted eight aces in seven service games en route to a second-round meeting with unseeded Fabio Fognini.
Lukasz Kubot d. Oscar Hernandez 7-5, 7-6(2)
Kubot survived two tight sets against Hernandez on Tuesday night, advancing to the Brasil Open second round after two hours and 19 minutes of spirited play. The two veterans exchanged one break of serve each until Hernandez faltered while serving to stay in the opening set at 5-6. Despite the disappointment, the 31-year-old Spaniard battled back from a break down in the second and successfully served to stay in the match at both 4-5 and 5-6. Kubot, however, seized an immediate mini-break in the tiebreaker for a 2-0 lead before racing through it seven points to two. The 27-year-old Pole moves on and can eagerly anticipate a marquee second-round matchup with No. 2 seed Albert Montanes.
