Fifth seed Tomas Berdych fought his way to a first-round victory at the SAP Open Monday night. The Czech advanced to the second round after outlasting American Wayne Odesnik in three sets.

Fifth seed Tomas Berdych survived a tough opening-round clash with Wayne Odesnik late Monday. The Czech, aided by his tally of 13 aces, prevailed 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 in two hours and 27 minutes of play. After splitting the first two sets, Berdych collected match point in the 12th game. The Czech missed two match-point chances, but connected on a third to seal the victory.
Berdych will take on Jarkko Nieminen in the second round. Nieminen rallied from a set down to dismiss wildcard Lars Poerschke Monday afternoon, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Leonardo Mayer def. Ernests Gulbis 7-5, 6-4
Leonardo Mayer is through to the round of 16 after defeating Ernests Gulbis Monday afternoon. The Argentine saved all six of the break points he faced during the match, holding on to down the Latvian 7-5, 6-4 in 91 minutes. Mayer earned a key service break at 5-5 in the opening set, then held on to close 7-5 at the 52-minute mark. A competitive second set had both players holding serve until 4-4. The Argentine secured a break in the ninth game, placing him in position to serve for the match.
Mayer ended the afternoon with 10 aces and 11 of 11 service games held. The 22-year-old moves ahead to face either top seed Andy Roddick or qualifier Ryler DeHeart in the round of 16.
