Juan Monaco made quick work of Joao Souza Saturday afternoon, dispatching the qualifier in straight sets. The former finalist will meet either Thomaz Bellucci or Fernando Gonzalez for the title.
Second seed Juan Monaco recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win over Brazilian qualifier Joao Souza on Saturday. The Argentine converted four of five break points during the contest, capping off the victory in one hour and 14 minutes. Monaco is through to his second championship match at the Movistar Open, having advanced to the same stage in 2008.
The Argentine quickly built a 3-0 advantage, helped by some shaky play from the Brazilian. Souza had trouble holding serve as he continued to spray wild ground stroke errors. A lucky net cord went Monaco’s way on set point at 5-1, sealing the opener in 28 minutes.
After dropping his opening service game to trail 0-1 in set two, Souza looked to settle into the match. The Brazilian reduced his error count to level 1-1, aided by a forehand shank from Monaco. Monaco recovered the break to lead 2-1, capitalizing on a netted backhand from the qualifier. The former Movistar Open finalist passed through the rest of the match untroubled, earning double match point at 5-4. A backhand miss from Souza earned Monaco safe passage into the championship match.
Monaco captured 20 of 26 first-serve points on the day. He awaits the winner of the Gonzalez-Bellucci semifinal to be played late Saturday night.
