Marin Cilic had his nation's senior tennis statesman in his box for the Zagreb final, with former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic glad that his magic can rubbed off on his younger Croatian countryman.
Ivanisevic advised the new world No. 10 during this week's home indoor event, with the fresh input paying dividends as Cilic toppled German Michael Berrer for the title, a second back-to-back triumph after winning back-to-back in Chennai last month.
Cilic, who gave Andy Murray a four-set fight their Australian Open semi-final, backed up his trophy from a year ago in Zagreb.
"It is a great honor to work with Goran," Cilic said his time with Ivanisevic, who achieved his career-long dream by winning the 2001 Wimbledon title over Australian Patrick Rafter after losing in title shots in 1992, 1994, and 1998.
Ivanisevic has tried to remain on the fringes of the game since his retirement at Wimbledon in 2004.
In addition to trying out a construction business and spending time on his yacht in the Adriatic, the colorful 38-year-old, whose huge serve paved the way for the like of Ivo Karlovic and Mark Philippoussis, also made a try at coaching the Davis Cup side in 2006 but quit after a short tenure in a dispute with the national federation.
