    Santiago - Monaco through to quarters, Acasuso retires Juan Monaco is through to the last eight at the Movistar Open after defeating fellow Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela on Thursday. Compatriot Jose Acasuso retired during his round of 16 clash with Eduardo Schwank.

    Former Movistar Open finalist Juan Monaco earned a quarterfinal berth Thursday afternoon, downing countryman Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets. The second seed defeated his elder compatriot 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 29 minutes. The victory marks the first head-to-head win for Monaco since the pair met at Costa Do Sauipe in 2006.

    Both men turned in multiple shaky service games in the opening set, neither able to hold onto a lead. After losing a break advantage at 2-0 and 4-2, Monaco proved to be the steadier of the two. The 25-year-old secured a 5-3 edge, helped by a costly double-fault from Chela. Monaco struck two aces in the ninth game to close the set in 42 minutes.

    A neutral second set turned in favor of Chela at 3-2. The 30-year-old snagged a break of serve as Monaco shanked a forehand wide. Chela served to level the match at 5-3, but failed to finish. An errant backhand from the Chela racquet brought the contest to parity at 5-4. Monaco, successfully cutting into his error count, captured four consecutive games to reach double match-point at 6-5. Another forehand mistake from Chela sealed the 89-minute match-victory for the second seed.

    Monaco converted five of seven break-point opportunities on the day. He moves through to battle Peter Luczak for a place in the semifinal. The Australian dismissed qualifier David Marrero early Thursday, 6-3, 7-6.

    Eduardo Schwank def. (6) Jose Acasuso 6-7, 6-2 (retired)

    Former Movistar Open champion Jose Acasuso had his 2010 campaign cut short Thursday. The sixth seed retired with at the start of the third set, allowing countryman Eduardo Schwank to pass into the quarterfinal.

    Schwank will square off against either Thomaz Bellucci or Paul Capdeville in the next round.
