Michael Berrer defeated No. 4 seeded Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals of the Zagreb Indoors on Friday. Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner, meanwhile, recovered from a set down to register wins.
Michael Berrer d. (4) Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-3
Berrer recorded his second shock victory of the week to reach his first tour level semifinal since October 2007. The German, who defeated Troicki’s compatriot Janko Tipsarevic on Tuesday, won 19 of 21 points behind his first serve in the opening set. He managed to convert one of four break chances he created to forge ahead.
Berrer again had a plethora of opportunities to move ahead in the second frame of play, but one break was enough for him to book his place in the next round. The world No. 65 had to fight off only one break point in the entire match.
Berrer, who is yet to drop a set this week, will face compatriot Philipp Petzschner in the last four.
(3) Jurgen Melzer d. Illya Marchenko 3-6, 6-0, 7-5
Melzer won a topsy-turvy encounter to reach the semifinals. The opening set was ridden with errors. Marchenko fell a break behind early in the match, but he broke in Melzer’s next two service games to lead 4-2. Although the Ukrainian surrendered his advantage in the very next game, he fired a forehand passing shot to go 5-3 ahead. Marchenko was unable to take his first four set points, but he converted his fifth when Melzer netted a backhand return.
Melzer secured an early break in the second frame of play and he quickly leveled the contest. The Austrian stamped his authority on the match and he wrapped up the set without losing a game.
After breaks were exchanged early in the final set, Melzer broke to lead 5-3 when Marchenko pushed a backhand long, but he played an edgy service game to surrender his advantage. The Austrian then went 5-6 ahead and he finally secured his place in the semifinals when Marchenko netted a volley. He’ll play defending champion Marin Cilic in the last four.
Philipp Petzschner bt. Lukas Lacko 6-7(1), 6-2, 6-2
Petzschner came from a set behind for the third time this week to defeat Slovakia’s Lacko. Petzschner broke to lead 3-1 in the opening set and he had two opportunities to open up a 5-1 advantage. He was, however, unable to take either of his chances and Lacko converted his first break point in the next game to bring the contest back on serve. The Slovak had to stave off a set point at 4-5, but he had no problems in the tiebreak, taking it 7-1.
Petzschner took both break points he created as he raced through the second frame of play. The German had particular joy attacking his opponent’s second serve, winning three of 12 points when Lacko missed his first delivery.
The first three games of the final set went against serve as Petzschner took a 2-1 lead. The world No. 84 then secured his third break to move 4-1 clear and he survived a tricky service game to wrap up the victory.
