Defending champion Fernando Gonzalez is through to the last eight at the Movistar Open following his straight-set round of 16 win over Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.
Top seed Fernando Gonzalez continued his smooth progress in Santiago late Wednesday evening. The Chilean earned safe passage into the final eight after defeating second-round opponent Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-4, 6-3. With the victory, Gonzalez improves his head-to-head record to 2-0 over the Spaniard.
Gonazlez snagged an early break at 1-1 in the opening set, courtesy of a trademark blistering forehand. After an errant forehand cost the Chilean the lead at 3-2, he recaptured the advantage as Ramirez Hidalgo returned the favor in the seventh game. Gonzalez held serve comfortably for the remainder of the set to collect triple set point at 5-4. Another strike from the forehand wing gave the Chilean the 6-4 set in 32 minutes.
Gonzalez survived a slight hiccup at the start of set two, saving double break point at 0-1. The top seed upped the pace of his groundstrokes to secure a service break at 1-1, aided by a backhand winner. Gonzalez missed two chances to earn a 4-2 insurance break, but regrouped to reach match point in the ninth game. The Chilean booked a quarterfinal berth in familiar fashion, sealing the 70-minute match with a forehand winner.
Gonzalez capped off the evening with eight aces and 25 of 29 points won on his first serve.
The four-time Movistar Open champion advances to contest a quarterfinal-round clash against Marcel Granollers. The Spaniard recorded a second-round win over Lukasz Kubot early Wedensday, 6-4, 6-2.
