    (1) Fernando Gonzalez def. Oscar Hernandez 6-2, 6-1

Defending champion Fernando Gonzalez encountered little trouble during his first-round clash with Oscar Hernandez on Tuesday. The No. 1 seed recorded an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory one minute short of an hour. The 29-year-old Chilean, four times a title-winner in Chile, faced only one break point during the match.

Gonzalez jumped ahead early, securing a 3-2 lead after striking a cross-court backhand winner. The Chilean, quickly reaching set point as Hernandez served at 2-5, closed the 31-minute opening set with a backhand return winner.

The top seed continued his strong effort in set two, earning an immediate break of the Spaniard’s serve. The Chilean led 3-0, aided by a handful of winners from both wings. Hernandez fell behind 1-5, following a poorly attempted drop-shot. A forehand error from the Hernandez racquet sealed the match for Gonzalez.

Gonzalez will square off against qualifier Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the next round. The Spaniard downed Victor Crivoi Tuesday afternoon, 6-4, 6-2.

    (3) Thomaz Bellucci def. Nicolas Lapentti 3-6, 6-1, 6-1

Third seed Thomaz Bellucci rallied to post his first career victory over veteran Nicolas Lapentti early Tuesday. The Brazilian dug his way out of a set deficit to prevail 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in one hour and 46 minutes. Bellucci had trailed Lapentti 2-0 heading into the match, having lost both previous meetings on clay.

The 21-year-old, ranked 35th in the world, converted seven of 11 break=point opportunities on the day.

Bellucci advances to take on Paul Capdeville in the second round. The Chilean overcame a slow start to defeat wildcard compatriot Cristobal Saavedra-Corvalan 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
