Marin Cilic booked his place in the second round of the Zagreb Indoors with a comfortable win over Jan Hajek. Ivan Ljubicic, meanwhile, defeated Arnaud Clement.
(1) Marin Cilic bt. Jan Hejek 6-2, 6-2
Cilic took just 56 minutes to breeze past world No. 84 Hajek. The Croat hit a series of piercing groundstrokes in the opening set and he claimed an early break to move 2-1 ahead. Hajek held a 40-0 lead at 2-4, but Cilic produced a number of stunning shots to secure a second break. The world no. 10 then comfortably held serve to wrap up the set 6-2.
The second frame of play was just as straightforward for Cilic. The Croatian No. 1 punched away a backhand return to break in the very first game of the set. Hajek then dumped a mid-court shot into the net to gift his opponent a 4-1 advantage and Cilic clinched victory on his second match point with a big forehand.
Cilic will play Daniel Koellerer in the second round. The Austrian defeated Andrey Golubev in three sets yesterday.
(2) Ivan Ljubicic bt. Arnaud Clement 7-6(4), 6-3
Ljubicic secured a straight-set victory over Clement in an encounter that lasted 96 minutes. Both players claimed one break of serve each in the opening set, but it was Ljubicic who upped his level in the tiebreak. The world No. 24 clinched the ‘breaker 7-4 to register the first set.
Ljubicic’s serve functioned well in the second frame of play and the Croat converted the only break point created by either player. He hit 11 aces in the match and easily held at 5-3 to book his place in the second round
The Croatian No. 2 will face Lukas Lacko in the last 16. The Slovakian was leading by a set when Denis Istomin retired in their first round clash on Tuesday.
