Michael Berrer defeated No. 5 seeded Janko Tipsaervic in the opening-round of the Zagreb Indoors on Tuesday evening. Philipp Petzschner, meanwhile, beat Christophe Rochus.
Michael Berrer bt. (5) Janko Tipsarevic 7-6(5), 6-3
Tipzarevic defeated Berrer in Valencia last year, but the German gained his revenge with a hard-fought win in Zagreb. Berrer served for an error-strewn opening set at 5-4, but Tipsarevic secured his first break of the match to thwart him. World No. 65 Berrer created three more break chances in Tipsarevic’s next service game, but the No. 5 seed survived to take a 6-5 lead.
Undeterred, Berrer came through a tricky service game to take the set into a ‘breaker. He battled from a mini-break down to forge a 6-5 advantage and hit a forehand winner to clinch the first set.
Berrer fell a break behind early in the second frame of play, but he managed to keep his composure and served exceptionally well. He claimed 80 per cent of points when he made his first serve and also won 11 of 16 points when Tipsarevic missed his first delivery. The German converted two of five break chances to seal an impressive victory. He will face Croatian wildcard Petar Jelenic in the next round.
Philipp Petzschner bt. Christophe Rochus 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1
Germany’s Petzschner recovered from a set behind to defeat Rochus in just over two hours on Tuesday afternoon. Despite firing down ten aces in the first frame of play, Petzschner was unable to open up a set advantage. The German led 4-2, but Rochus broke back and a tiebreak was needed to decide the outcome of the set. The Belgian managed to hold his nerve and he clinched the 'breaker while losing only four points.
Petzschner improved his level of play in the second set and his serve continued to work well. The world No. 84 did not allow Rochus any chances to break and he won 13 out of 14 points behind his first delivery. Petzschner created eight break points of his own and he took two of them to level the match.
Petzschner found himself in a 0-40 hole in his opening service game of the third set, but he saved all three break points and had little trouble securing victory after that early scare. Petzschner will play compatriot Benjamin Becker in the next round.
