  • Melzer and Troicki progress in Zagreb

    2/1/10 11:48 PM | Vincent Glenn
Melzer and Troicki progress in Zagreb Jurgen Melzer and Viktor Troicki are through to the second-round of the Zagreb Indoors after beating Daniel Brands and Rainer Schuettler respectively.

Jurgen Melzer bt Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-3

Melzer secured a straight-sets win over Brands in a contest that lasted 94 minutes. The Austrian, who won his last title indoors with victory over Marin Cilic in the final of Vienna last October, began his Zagreb campaign with a scrappy performance. He was, however, solid behind his serve in the opening frame of play, winning 80 per cent of points when he made his first delivery. The No. 3 seed was unable to clinch the set when he served at 5-3, but he secured his second break in the very next game to take it 6-4.

The second set saw both players create a whole host of opportunities to forge ahead. Melzer managed to stave off all five break points he faced and he successfully went after Brands’ second serve, claiming 69 per cent of points when the German missed his first delivery. Despite having five breakpoints of his own, Melzer broke Brands only once, but it was enough for him to wrap up the set 6-3.

Melzer will face Oliver Rochus in the second round. The Belgian came from a set behind to defeat Igor Kunitsyn.

Viktor Troicki bt. Rainer Schuettler 6-3, 6-2

Troicki took just over an hour to wrap up victory over former world No. 5 Schuettler. The No. 4 seed’s first serve was particularly potent in the opening set and he won 12 out of 13 points behind it. The Serb saved both break points he faced and he broke Schuettler twice to clinch the opening set 6-3.

Troicki continued to serve well in the second frame of play, winning 86 per cent of points when he made his first delivery. The world No. 31, who was defeated in the semifinals of this event by eventual winner Marin Cilic last year, again broke Schuettler twice as he cantered to an easy win. Schuettler was unable to create any break point chances in the second set and he won just 4 of 12 points when he missed his first serve.

Troicki will play Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan in the second round. He beat Mischa Zverev in straight-sets.
