World No. 1 Roger Federer brings the confidence that only 15 Grand Slam titles can offer into his semifinal matchup with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, as the Swiss passes another record milestone.
The match with the 2008 finalist is Federer's 23rd consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, a stat which even amazes the man billed as the best to ever play the game.
"You always believe the streak is gonna be broken," he confessed. "I stopped thinking about it after the second round (last week) on and just started focusing on the tournament.
"It helps once the tournament starts. You focus match-for-match and point-for-point. I forget about the record. Now obviously that it's safe again and I've been able to add one.
"It's amazing, definitely one of the most incredible things I have in my resume."

This is my absolute favourite stat....to me its even sweeter than the 15 Gs's simplly because i think this feat will never EVER (..and i dare say ever ...) be broken !
Say what you want about the man ...but if you take a minute to actually analyze this particular stat ...you are forced to be at awe with his tennis and mental strength ..its just mind blowing. Almost 6 years !
C'MON !!
AO10....time to lift another one down under

This is truly the greatest tennis record ever. Hard to imagine that someone will ever be able to break it. BTW dont know how much longer would Fed be able to stretch this record. I believe that he will stretch it to 30.

It's an insane number, more than twice the next closest one. It is almost a certainty that this record will remain unbroken, let alone anyone else getting close to it. What about his stretch of GS finals... does anyone know? If he makes it past Tsonga, that's 8 in a row I think. He previously had 10 straight finals (correct me if I'm wrong).

Too many records and he's not done yet. The field got stronger and still he's ever-present in the Slams. Davy was HOT and got beaten. Rafa was HOT and went out. Djoker was HOT and got out.
Maybe the heir of Fed's throne is Muzza. His tennis is delightful to watch altho his facial expressions are a lil annoying. And Fed took 17 tries to get his 1st Slam. This is Muzza's 17. ALl the best FED!!!

If history tells us anything about sport, it's that you use the word "never" only at your own peril.
That said, this record is unbelievable. To be that good, that healthy, that mentally strong to gut it out even when you don't have your A game on a given day is astonishing. Heck, how many guys on the tour today have even PLAYED 23 straight Grand Slams?
By the way, behind Fed's 23, the longest active streak is ... 1 by Murray, Tsonga and Cilic, none of whom made the semis at the previous Slam.
Here's another one: In the last 4 Slams, only two players, besides Federer of course, have made the semis of even TWO (and not consecutively): Murray and DelPo.
It's a jaw-dropping run.
SenorPlaid , 1/29/10 4:37 PM
One other bit of trivia. The last player to make it to back-to-back Slam semis besides Federer: Nadal, who made 5 in a row from Aussie '08 to Aussie '09 (streak snapped at French '09).
OK, one more: Let's assume for the sake of argument that Federer's streak ends this year at the French. To eclipse the mark, Murray, Tsonga or Cilic would have to make the semis of every Slam through the U.S. Open -- in 2015!

haven't been able to watch any AO the past week. but i am home now and just watched a friend's recording of the semi with davy. what a great match! were i not such a fedfan pulling for his 23rd semi, i would totally have pulled for a kolya win...and i mean especially to get to the final and get his much deserved first GS! ah, more diamonds and another trip to the maldives for the 'love-birds.'
23 semi's in a row and the closest to that record is lendl at 10! fed is just unreal great, man. who wouldn't be impressed with themself ??? any player would enjoy how remarkable they are....even rafa, lol...
yeah tor, i like mandy's tennis. i won't be able to watch it 'live' but may the best man win, right? the best being RF!
haven't had time to read any press, not even the UK press, which must be hilarious by now, completely going 'caged apes' with frenzy. fed the terrible and mandy the hero...and on and on.
i heard the forecast is for the match being literally HOT, as in like 90 degrees F. and windy? didn't hear that part. just like to see a great 5 set match, taped and fed winning. but maxi, wherever you are, i am ALL nerves already! xo zoey

Oh well, what the heck, now that I'm on a roll and have little to do at work ...
I took a look at the records of the other top 10 players, plus Cilic in Slams, and here's what I found:
Nadal: Has not played 23 straight Slams. Current run is two. His best run is 13 from French '06 to French '09. Active streak is two consecutive quarterfinals. (Nadal's best run was 13 consecutive fourth rounds, from French '06 to French '09.)
Djokovic: Has not played 23 straight Slams. Current run is 21. Active streak is 16 consecutive second rounds, six consecutive third rounds, three consecutive quarterfinals.
Murray: Has not played 23 straight Slams. Current run is 10. Active streak is eight consecutive third rounds, seven consecutive fourth rounds.
Del Potro: Has not played 23 straight Slams. Current run is 14. Active streak is 11 consecutive second rounds, two consecutive fourth rounds.
Davydenko: Has played 23 straight Slams, although his current run is four. Active streak is four consecutive third rounds, two consecutive fourth rounds. (Davydenko's best run was seven consecutive third rounds, from US '06 to French '08.)
Roddick: Has played 23 straight Slams, although his current run is seven. Active streak is seven consecutive second rounds, six consecutive third rounds. (Roddick's best run was 11 consecutive second rounds from Wimby '03 to Aussie '06.)
Soderling: Has not played 23 straight Slams. Current run is eight. Has no active streak. His best was four consecutive second rounds and three consecutive fourth rounds, all in 2009.
Verdasco: Has played in the last 23 straight Slams. Active streak is 19 consecutive second rounds, eight consecutive third rounds and five consecutive fourth rounds.
Tsonga: Has not played 23 straight Slams. Current run is six. Active streak is six consecutive third rounds and two consecutive fourth rounds.
Cilic: Has not played 23 straight Slams. Current run is nine. Active streak is nine consecutive second rounds, seven consecutive third rounds and two consecutive quarterfinals.
By the way, Fernando Gonzalez has played in the last 23 Slams and has an active streak of nine consecutive second rounds, six consecutive third rounds and two consecutive fourth rounds.
So, to sum up again, Federer's run: Un-be-liev-a-ble.

thanks alot...very helpful stats. really man federer's run is not believable ,this record will stay intact for decades.
vamosrafa , 1/29/10 5:54 PM
So far, the next-best streak I've been able to find is Lendl's 29 consecutive fourth-round appearances, from US Open 1982 to French 1990 (which he skipped to get ready for Wimbledon), which though doesn't reach the level of Federer's is still longer and a very impressive show of consistent greatness.
And for what it's worth, Jimmy Connors made the fourth round of every Slam he chose to play (he almost never played Australia and skipped the French for five years due to a snit, including the year he likely would've won the Grand Slam in 74) every year from 1973 to 1986, a run of 35 Slams in a row. His run included 27 consecutive quarterfinal appearances.
Granted, the times were different, but that's still impressive as heck!

Sometimes Fed is just too amazing, it's unbelievable.
Everytime I watch him play, I am certain I am watching he greatest tennis player ever. All his rivals has done good challenging him. But I just cant see anyone being better than him overall. You can be successful on 1 surface or 1 Slam but to be able to be so good on ALL surfaces and dominate for 6 years.
Even if he loses this one, he'll just come back and win another Wimby or USO. The field is strong but when Fed is at his best, no one can touch him.
GO FED GO!!!
torres9 , 1/30/10 3:09 AM
Congrats! What a feat............
bianca , 1/30/10 4:52 AM
23 consecutive semis - that explains why the guy seems so relaxed and composed entering a slam final, and he's won 15. That's crazy.

When Roger Federer, I assume, first confirmed me as a friend on Facebook, March 12.09, the day after Rafael Nadal did, I was mystified. A bright red Valentine's Gift Card in the photos section. I added them some three weeks before. Though I became riddled and ending up deleting the two the very next day. Roger got married weeks afterhand nearing the Monte Carlo Masters Series and did a great interview call 'I'm really Happy' in which I logged a good wishing comment, ending up a total of seventeen, as I felt the utmost need to focus aplenty and carry the story whereever it lead. It was good.
Seeing what was said about competing until 2012, I thought it a most horrific idea, as I thought then the kids should be thereby the first of priority. I know he could return to conquer evermore, now things are heating ravishing away!!
