  • Djokovic determined to avoid another Slam pullout

    1/28/10 4:29 AM | Johan Lindahl
Djokovic determined to avoid another Slam pullout Novak Djokovic was determined not to let unpleasant history repeat itself, with the Serb soldiering on to defeat against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga despite an upset stomach complaint at the Australian Open.

Djokovic has failed to complete four Grand Slam singles matches since 2006, but was able to play on for a five-set loss after a medical timeout to vomit off court early in the fourth set.

Despite the waves of discomfort, the third seed said he was determined to see the nearly four-hour, five-set contest through: "No, no. I wasn't thinking," he said of any retirement plan.

The loss cost Djokovic an admittedly long-odds chance to increase his ranking, which would have been dependent on losses from the likes of Roger Federer and Andy Murray. "For me it was important to get as far in the tournament as possible. I had a high ambitions here.

"I felt well and played well and just feeling confident on the court, and then this happens. This is the most disappointing thing."

Djokovic said that he had followed his usual dietary routine: "I didn't eat some kind of shrimps or something. It was pasta. It's too bad."

This sounds like nerves. If he followed his normal diet, why should he be sick? Since he was sick, couldn't he just take something for it? PeptoBismol, Imodium AD, Tums, a compazine shot? There's no doctor courtside?

i knew this was Lindahl's article from the moment i read the title...

Titles like this are making me even more protective towards Nole...soo out of context...

OllyK , 1/28/10 5:47 AM

chr18, i thought the same at the first moment, but than on the second thought, once you settle yourself in the match (like he did) nerve factor doesn't exist anymore - adrenalin, endorphin, etc take care of the butterflies, nerves ...

it is possible that adrenaline rush induces stomach pain with some persons but again he's been in those situations before. my guess is either some kind of food poisoning or physical exhaustion.

rfzr , 1/28/10 5:47 AM

im afraid djokovic has been a real disappointment.
he had tsonga but his fitness and lack of fight was just poor.
he should have won that match in straights.

i like djoko's game but his attitude on court is very bad.
he just starts to give up and no self motivation like rafa, he just throws in the towel.

and his forehand is techically flawed a little and techniques get exposed when ur under pressure. he hits the balls too early alot when under pressure and his serve has become a liability.

I'm just amazed how quick people can jump into conclusion and JUDGE the players as IF THEY THEMSELVES has been a part of a tournamant as big as the magnitude of a SLAM........ This is classic bad-mouthing for the sake of attracting attention! shame shame shame!!!

McQ , 1/28/10 10:54 AM

mcq, have you noticed it's the same trumpets who trash the players who have beaten their fav in big moments??? predictable pathetic pattern. desperate, vindictive and nasty - often fans of the same player.

homos , 1/28/10 11:17 AM

I haven't read Tsongas presser till now...MAN!!!! I must say that I'm disgusted...Such a disgrace...Even tho Nole said him on the net: "Sorry for that, I really needed to go out!" he said those things after....I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but: GO, ROGER!

OllyK , 1/28/10 2:53 PM

why what did he say that was so bad Olly? "Five years ago" ?

stu , 1/28/10 4:28 PM

yeah...what a begginig of a presser, very funny..really, was that necessary? And not only that:
?Today he had a stomach problem, but he often has problems when it?s not going,? said the Frenchman, who lost the 2008 Australian Open final to Djokovic in four sets but has beaten the Serb in all five meetings since. ?After the final in Australia, I?ve always said that if I had taken him to a fifth set, I would have crushed him because I can physically take five sets? I go for my shots, I don?t waste much energy and I become tough.?

Asked what he was most satisfied with, Tsonga said, ?My fight and mental [strength]. French players are often criticized for not having the mental but tonight I think I proved it?s in false.?
He knew that he would probably lose if Nole was feeling fine till the end...so why doing this? Maybe I'm just too much vulnerable now, stu, I don't know...

OllyK , 1/28/10 5:48 PM

*beginning, typo, sorry... ;)
He would "CRUSH" Nole in 2008 if...grrrr...he is so arogant!

OllyK , 1/28/10 5:52 PM

and, btw, a friend who lives in France, told me that Tsonga said for their TV that Nole even faked stomach problems yesterday, I forgot to mention that...

OllyK , 1/28/10 5:55 PM

yea no way he could have "crushed" the 2008 Nole! i thought Jo and he were friends though!

stu , 1/28/10 6:18 PM

I'm not really sure why commies/some posters are so sure this was nerves on Nole's part. It's not like: he'd never been this far in a slam before (he's obvs been further consistently); he wasn't leading; or he had way more pressure than usual (he was actually overlooked in terms of favs/interesting story lines). So why would he be soooo nervous?

GBG , 1/28/10 6:48 PM

I feel so sorry for Nole, he has an amazing game, great movement and consistant serve, and has a huge personality making him great for the tour. He is always kind, and a real sportsman, such a pity.
Is this true of what Tsonga says? I cannot imagine it, I didn't think that Tsonga was like that?
He has had a lot of stick over the last years Nole for withdrawing but I really feel he has some health issues, does heat effect him? exhurtion? he had the easiest of draws so I don't understand how he could be feeling tired, maybe its wrong match preperation, he isn't known for his self discipline.

afrodite7 , 1/28/10 7:21 PM

It's impossible for another player to know the extent of their opponent's injury. I believe Nole has a breathing problem he had partially corrected by surgery several years ago? I like Rafa's approach (but then I am a KAD) after Nole's 09 AO QF final retirement of saying it was very hot, he hadn't had a chance to talk to him but was sure there was a valid reason.

GBG , 1/28/10 8:21 PM

I honestly don't see why players would fake an injury, because they still lose the match it's not as if the results null and void, so what is the point; it still counts towards the h2h.

obviously that loss in the finals still hurts Jo even after 2 years and it will continue to haunt him.

rfzr , 1/29/10 12:29 AM

every1 seems to b talkin bout djokovics illness at the beginning of the 4th set. wat they rnt talkin bout is that he was up a break in sets 1 and 2. he will be kicking himself 4 not winning in straight sets-b4 the illness really affected his game. this is an example of wat can happen if u dont take ur chances.

tj600 , 1/29/10 4:47 AM

I certainly don't want to pile on Nole after this unfortunate loss. I see what has been posted about Rafa and as his most loyal fan, I would never want to do the same to any other player. We don't know what happened during the match. It's always hard to lose with so much at stake. I don't see how you can fake throwing up and diarrhea. Nole was sick, he lost the match, end of story!

Nativenewyorker , 1/29/10 7:24 AM

Why would you fake an illness when you are winning hands down??????

deuce , 1/29/10 7:28 AM

Everyone is different. Some people are more prone to catching bugs more easily than others, and having breathing difficulties in the heat is a real condition which I have suffered from on occasions when it's very hot. It is real, believe me, and you don't have to be an asthma sufferer to suffer from it. I can also empathise with people who get food poisoning at the drop of a hat, because that's another thing that I am prone to, on several occasions my husband and I would eat the same meal at a restaurant, and I would suffer, and he wouldn't. The last time we went on holiday I spent the first week in bed with food poisoning and ended up having to go to a hospital.

So let's trust others, and not judge them by our own circumstances. It's no shame to lose to Tsonga, so why would Djokovic go to the length of pretending he is ill when as far a I can remember, it was still possible for him to win the match.
