  • Roddick impressed with Tomic potential

    1/25/10 2:14 AM | Johan Lindahl
Roddick impressed with Tomic potential Local teenaged hope Bernard Tomic will wind down from the Australian Open by downsizing to the Challenge circuit next month in Tasmania.

The 17-year-old, who made waves at the Grand Slam with his petulant complaints about a late-night second-round loss to Marin Cilic keeping him up past his bedtime, will try and start a serious ATP career, taking heart over compliments from American Andy Roddick.

Roddick says the youngster is "on the right track" and remains the best candidate for Australia's long-sought top ten player to eventually replaced Lleyton Hewitt, 28.

"I saw a lot of him last year at the Aussie Open and he has been one of the bigger stories of the first few days both years," said Roddick. "It's a matter of if he puts the work in.

"By all accounts, he's willing to do that. Beyond that, he certainly seems like he's on the right track."

The 289th-ranked Tomic is hoping for a Davis Cup call-up this spring, but will likely have to solve a serious personality clash with top man Hewitt which has simmered since last summer at Wimbledon.

why the offensive comments atr?
I too was impressed by tomic, he isn't a charismatic player at all, but his way of placing his shots was interesting he really had Cilic guessing, there were laps of concentration though and something very blaze about him at times, Roddicks right when he says about putting the work in, you cannot become a champion on talent alone!

afrodite7 , 1/25/10 6:14 AM

roddick has no talent at all. only on serve he has talent, thats it.

attackingtennisrulez , 1/25/10 7:54 AM

@attackingtennisrulez... have you once in your life play tennis ? Not sure...

spoonnie , 1/25/10 10:37 AM

@spoo

i have played tennis, coached tennis, watched tennis, analysed tennis indepth,

attackingtennisrulez , 1/25/10 12:27 PM

ATR...what is your problem... Apsolute Total Retard??? ...is it??

zare , 1/25/10 1:01 PM

ATR, i've read all your comments in this site and it seems like you hates all the players.. I wonder why?

GoldenRose , 1/25/10 1:23 PM

i sussed attackingtennisrulez out. rather than meaning they like the attacking style of tennis, they just like to attack tennis i.e. they like to slag off the game and the players. that's the only explanation i can think of

Sib69 , 1/25/10 1:54 PM

"i have played tennis, coached tennis, watched tennis, analysed tennis indepth, "

And yet, you still don't know anything about the sport, do you? Man, I feel sorry for those you've "coached."

Come on big man: Two men enter, one man leaves. You in or out?

And zare, you hit the nail on the head: Attacking tennis rules means attacking the sport is what he likes. Oh well, I like to match wits with m o r o n i c trolls, when I'm feeling ornery, and January in Chicago brings out the orneriness.

SenorPlaid , 1/25/10 3:31 PM

atr is a touch too smart to be a total retard

but so far behaves much too dumb to stop looking for negative attention

her?his comments often have a grain of truth but are mostly cheap shot in every direction... for effect

atr: you coached tennis?

chlorostoma , 1/25/10 3:34 PM

Man ,i dnt knw where Tomic will end up, but he drive me crazy i mean it was so late the match against Cilic and God he kept returnin every frteakin ball,i like guys who goes for their shots, not wait the opponent to miss like so many players these days.

Believe , 1/25/10 3:51 PM

chloro - maybe to his little brother. He's not old enough to have really "coached" tennis.

RickyDimon , 1/25/10 4:17 PM

Ricky: I read it in a similar way: not disbelieving 100% but certain that the 'coaching' was not serious coaching.

chlorostoma , 1/25/10 4:39 PM

Moderator, would you be so kind as to ban "attackingtennisrulez". He's obviously someone looking for attention and he's trying to get it the cheap way. Anyone who writes "no one cares about ur fake opinion roddick. no one here in aussie likes u." is not really a tennis fan. People, if you ignore him he will go away......

chucky , 1/25/10 4:56 PM

Oops, I meant sib69 called it correctly. (Dang I hate when I don't give credit where credit's due.)

Which isn't to say, zare, that you also didn't call it.

SenorPlaid , 1/25/10 7:22 PM

Simply...we should ignore him... but then again why???
Why should I ignore someone who is here just to nerve anyone here
Poor frustrated guy...is bringing politics in this site. We don't need that here.
Thank's God there are thousands sites where you can show national, rasist and religional untollerancy and hate.
ATR is full of rage... don't know why... and don't wanna know...

zare , 1/25/10 7:53 PM

thanks SenorPlaid :D

Sib69 , 1/25/10 8:39 PM

All I know is I think I'll be rooting just a wee bit harder now for Roddick knowing full well what a victory would produce in the way of gnashed teeth, rended hair and tennistalk spam! ;-)

SenorPlaid , 1/25/10 9:39 PM

Senor Plaid,

Thank you for you brilliant post 1/25/10 3:31 pm! You saved me the trouble of going after this head case. :)

Nativenewyorker , 1/25/10 10:03 PM

hahaha. oh yes. i'll be rooting for roddick too :)

Sib69 , 1/25/10 10:23 PM

I dont think we should get too impressed by 17 or 18 year old kids or players who do well at juniors, in 2005 we heard a lot about how good Gasquet was some people even compared him with federer but he turned out to be a major disappointment, then there was a lot of fuss about Donald Young being the next great America player but his ranking is still so low that he has to qualify for big events, same with Tomic we should not expect too much from him unless he proves otherwise.
