Mikhail Youzhny has been forced to withdraw from the Australian Open after failing to shake off a wrist injury.
Russia’s Youzhny was due to play Lukasz Kubot today for the right to face Novak Djokovic in the fourth round. He picked up the wrist problem in his thrilling five-set defeat of Richard Gasquet in the opening round. The World No.20 was not adversely affected in his next match, dropping just four games against Jan Hajek, but was told by doctors that he risked exasperating the injury if he took to the court.
Poland’s Kubot has never before progressed to the last 16 of a Slam. His previous best run came at Roland Garros in 2007, when he reached the third round.
