A shoulder injury forces Marcos Baghdatis to retire in the second set against Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday night. Hewitt is through to a fourth-round clash with Roger Federer.
If their previous Australian Open encounter ended later than anyone could have expected, Saturday's match finished much quicker than anyone--except for Lleyton Hewitt--wanted.
Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis, whose five-set epic in 2008 concluded at 4:34 AM in the morning, were on the court for just 54 minutes in their third-round clash. Baghdatis trailed 6-0, 4-2 when he retired due to a shoulder injury that had started to surface in his second-round, five-set comeback win over David Ferrer.
"I just feel some pain in the shoulder," the Cypriot explained. "In the match I just couldn’t hit the forehand. I couldn’t control the ball. I didn’t think it would be this painful and this bothering during the match."
Hewitt, at the same time, put on a brief yet impressive display of tennis. The 22nd-ranked Australian made only five unforced errors in the first set while his typically tenacious defense prevented Baghdatis from striking a single winner during the first six games.
"That's about as good a package as he's put together in five years," Hewitt's former coach Roger Rasheed of the opening set.
Next up for Hewitt is Roger Federer, who steamrolled Albert Montanes in straight sets earlier on Saturday.

The key for Fed is to have a good mach against Hewitt because he needs the momentum to beat Davy or Verdasco. I'll be happy if Fed makes it to the SF this time. :)

Roger is looking good and I think he will beat Hewitt in four, to be honest though I haven't seen much of Hewitts play due to poor eurosport coverage so someone else might think I am playing Leytons chances down too much, we will see, hope its a good match, better for the crowd if it goes to a five setter however I can't see it with the mood Rogers in.
