  • Teenaged Tomic no night owl

    1/21/10 1:25 PM | Johan Lindahl
Teenaged Tomic no night owl Teenaged Aussie hope Bernard Tomic had a few complaints about losing a five-set late-night match at the Australian Open.

The 17-year-old, German-born of Croatian heritage and tipped as the future of the talent-short local game, didn't finish up until 2 am, an hour which the loser said was "ridiculous."

"To finish at this time, it's tough, but I have no excuses," said Tomic, beaten by Croatian 14th seed Marin Cilic. "If I'd have played during the day, which I requested, it could have been all changed.

"I think I should have won. But I'm proud of the way I played. It's difficult for me. I requested to play during the day, and it didn't happen, I think it's ridiculous."

The 2008 Melbourne junior winner said that he might have to start 2 am training sessions if this kind of scheduling continues at an event where Lleyton Hewitt finished a match win at 4:30 am two years ago.

"Name me any sport you play at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning, except this. Especially me, at my age, it's difficult."

The Open, frequent target of scheduling criticism, made a change this year, starting evening sessions 30 minutes earlier at 7 pm and putting the most important match first. Prior to Tomic, Justine Henin beat Elena Dementieva in a contest which took just short of three hours.

''talent-short local game''???

oh really? and this coming from a nation of 300 million people that couldnt find a talent if their lives depende on it. bit rich of u americans to criticise aussies which only has a population of 20 million. look in the mirror mate.
and i guess the US has some really talented guys ya? blake? isner? LOL

one thing i know, is that tomic could beat the top 10 mens tennis players in the US right now with ease. that list includes guys like roddick blake, isner, queery, young, harrisons, ginepri, fish, bryans, etc.

whether u like it or not, tomic will be a future superstar.
and i completely agree with tomic, he was an inch close to breaking cillic in the 5th set at 4-4. the cillic ball just caught the line by an inch on breakpoint on cillic's serve.

tomic was robbed, i hope he kicks cillic's rear end in the future.
give tomic about 2 or 3 more years and he will be domiating nadal and federer. infact tomic will send federer into retirement in the future, once tomic starts dominating the game.

and nadal, well nadal will be irrelevant when tomic gets more experience.

how the organisers put a 17 year old at 10pm is beyond insane.
womens tennis should be banned, it has ruined many mens matches, including costing nadal at the 2008 US open when he had to beat fish after 2am after a useless womens match.

Tomic is young inexperienced fellow who was given the opportunity to explain (read: justify!) his loss to Cilic. That already means a great accomplishment for him as he played Cilic who is one of the favorites to reach final stages of the AO. I think Bernard was playing some very nice shots and he sure does show great potential to be explored in the future. What he may not be aware of is that he was treated with the night match and I think Cilic is himself grateful. If it had been a day match, it would have caused more damage to Cilic?s future game at the AO. Ask both Djokovic and FedExpress what they prefer: night or day/sweating hot matches where you can hardly breathe...altogether, Tomic did well, whereas Cilic was bellow expectations and he will have to raise his level in order to do better next rounds...

natashao , 1/21/10 2:48 PM

Attacking, there is a rule: ladies first...without ladies, it wouldn?t be the same...didn?t you enjoy Henin vs Dementieva match? And what if there was Kirilenko playing instead? Would you still think the same and would you then consider womens tennis useless :))

natashao , 1/21/10 2:58 PM

So, he's complaining already, is he? What, precisely were the organizers to say to all of those people that had tickets to see him? "Nope, sorry. Justine took too long. Go on home now..."

I'm sorry, but that's just silly.

cherylmurray , 1/21/10 3:00 PM

Tomic lost an exceptional opportunity to show grace and maturity.

chlorostoma , 1/21/10 3:20 PM

There's no doubt, tomic's got immense talent, but he's got some attitude issue. Whinging won't take him to the top but patience and humilty will. He should be proud that the organisers put him in the Rod Laver evening session. I don't understand why can't a nearly 18 years old perform after midnight, that's just rubbish. Cilic won because he was the better player in the match when it mattered most. Can only hope Tomic doesn't waste his incredible talent in only looking for excuses.

Bernard Tomic facing Davis Cup exile
The Australian January 22, 2010

BERNARD Tomic's bizarre rant about being forced to play a night match has jeopardised his chances of winning Davis Cup selection and has the potential to further harm the tense relationship he has with local officials.

While the 17-year-old demonstrated in his five-set loss against world No 14 Marin Cilic that he has the talent and on-court temperament to live up to his billing as Australia's next great player, tennis officials were bemused when he blamed his failure on fading eyesight due to the timing of the marathon, which ended after 2am.

The rising star alleged he struggled to see after midnight and slammed organisers for ignoring his request for a day match, a submission contrary to that of his Australian Open debut a year ago when Tomic's camp requested the main night session.

"I had the same problem last year," Tomic said. "I can't see after 1am, 2am - for a 17-year-old to go out and play then, it's difficult.

"For the people I requested to play during the day, and it didn't happen, I think it's ridiculous." Local officials who accommodated Tomic with wild-cards into the past two Opens took a dim view of the criticism from a player who has provoked controversy for more than three years, either directly or through the actions of his father and coach, John Tomic.

The outburst prompted a scathing response from Tiley, who said Tomic needed to realise his comments damaged not only his own reputation but had implications elsewhere. Pointedly, he also said it was time for Tomic to realise he was responsible for his own actions, be it who he is coached by or how he behaves publicly.

"He had an opportunity to be really celebrated and . . . he could have come off and said, `I feel great about playing a great match and being on centre court'.

"To make comments like that, the story became not about his tennis but about the schedule."

"I know the players look at that, and they weren't looking at the match, they were looking at Bernard's comments. I actually don't think I am going to teach Bernard a lesson, I think it is the playing group that is going to teach him a lesson."

While Tomic was last night still to learn whether he would be sanctioned for the outburst, it is certain his comments have caused further harm to his hopes of representing Australia in its March Davis Cup tie against Thailand.

Despite the quality of his play all summer, with his performance peaking on Wednesday night against Cilic, the outburst caused further alarm to officials already concerned by the feud between Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt.

Tiley refused to publicly comment on whether the right-hander will play in the tie, saying it was up to coach Todd Woodbridge and captain John Fitzgerald, but confirmed he would be passing on his opinion to the pair, who report directly to him.

I'm sorry, but I just LAUGHED when I read this article in our papers today. You wanna be in the big league with the senior players, Tomic? Then don't whine about this. I agree that scheduling for AO can be crap at times, but EVERYONE else puts up with it. If you're in the MEN'S draw, you act like a man. You're no longer a boy with bedtime. If that's the case, go back to the juniors. :)

And I maintain my standing that yesterday's match may be really really long, but there's nothing epic about the quality of the play, and there's nothing epic about Tomic's play. Or Cilic's, for that matter.

jyannis , 1/21/10 4:06 PM

why would tournament organizers grant a request made by a 17-year-old clown who has no chance of making any kind of real run at the event?

get off the tour please, Tomic.

Cilic - my sincerest thanks for garbaging that piece of trash.

RickyDimon , 1/21/10 4:10 PM

homos - HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA GREAT article. So he's already pissed off Tennis Australia. DELIGHTFUL.

cherylmurray , 1/21/10 4:38 PM

It doesn't make sense for 5 set match to start after 10pm no matter whether you are a big boy, junior, senior or whoever. It just simply doesn't make sense.

The only person that can play before ladies at 19:00 is Roger Federer.

rfzr , 1/21/10 4:56 PM

attaking tennis rulez does johan lindahl sound like an american to you?? think first then type idiot.

willmw101 , 1/21/10 4:58 PM

did he call Johan an American?

and that "worthless" womens match before Fish-Nadal just happened to be Serena-Venus

CLASSIC that he listed the BRYAN BROTHERS on that list. and those are the ONLY guys on the list that Tomic could even dream of beating. Of course if they devoted one ounce of their tennis lives to singles, they would routine that kid.

RickyDimon , 1/21/10 5:24 PM

I don't think Fed is the only person to play at 19:00 before the ladies. Rafa and Hewitt were also scheduled before the ladies. Not fair to single out Fed. Rafa is also scheduled for the 19:00 time slot tomorrow for his third round match.

Tomic has to learn to grow up and stop complaining. Just look at the USO, many night matches finished in the early hours of the next day, if Tomic were to complain about timing like those, then he better not join the adult tours.

Whatever attackingtennis want to say about Tomic, that is his own opinion. Whether Tomic grows up to be a world beater or just another ordinary tennis player is totally out of attackingtennis's control. Until Tomic become a world beater in future, all these talks about his talent, future goat, or sending Fed into retirement or making Nadal irrelevant are just EMPTY TALKS ONLY.

luckystar , 1/21/10 5:37 PM

Awfully harsh on the youngster, he spoke his mind, unbriddled youth. He'll get there eventually. P.S. Humility is a sleazy word

JBo , 1/21/10 6:43 PM

Fed was the first, last year, to play before the ladies in the night session, but it's happening now more often. If the women want equal prize money, then they should share the burden of the scheduling.

***************

"I had the same problem last year," Tomic said. "I can't see after 1am, 2am - for a 17-year-old to go out and play then, it's difficult.

So it's not because of his age, he can't see, in that case he should go and find another day job, because there is no hope for him in tennis. And as for taking Cilic to 5 sets, Barry Cowan (a former British player) took Sampras to 5 sets and was hailed as the future of British tennis, he retired a couple of years later because he was getting nowhere fast; that was a one off feat never to be repeated, and he is still dining on that match as he is now an 'expert' commentator for SkySports.

So Tomic, it's not over until the fat lady sings, you are not there yet, but at least you could become an 'expert' commentator for Australian TV.

carrie , 1/21/10 7:54 PM

no wonder hewitt doesnt like him... he is in no position to be complaining at 17

hewitt6917 , 1/21/10 8:02 PM

so at 17, he doesn't like staying up til 2am? i'm 19 and always up til 2/3am. i work better overnight than during the day

and ricky... not a tomic fan then? :P

Sib69 , 1/21/10 8:31 PM

@ricky

i mentioned the bryan brothers because as useless as they are at singles, they are in the top 10 mens players in the US as singles players.
u will have a tough time watching tennis in the future when tomic starts winning big matches and tournaments. u are so bitter that tomic is doing well.
and i suppose u think ur idol isner is a better talent than tomic do u?
the only thing that isner does better is the serve and that is only because he is a giraffe. but tomic is 6'4, and only just turned 17, so he has alot more height left in him.

cant wait to see murray humiliate isner. go on muzza, show that kid how to play real tennis.

attackingtennisrulez , 1/21/10 9:12 PM

and another thing, i completely agree with tomic that hewitt is not good enough to practice with him at wimbledon. why should tomic bring his level down to hewitt's mug level.
tomic is the only decent real talent australia has had in many many years and the aussie media and aussie public are trying to bring him down even before he starts his pro career, just because a 17 year old kid being honest and telling the truth is thought of as whinging.
tomic doesnt give politically correct answers like nadal or others, tomic says what he really thinks, he has that swagger and confidence, u need that to be the very best, thats why he will be a future great.

everyone keeps saying where is australia's next great player, and when that great talent comes along, the media and public try to put him down and ruin him. just typical of these people that never picked up a racket now all of a sudden experts on tennis.

attackingtennisrulez , 1/21/10 9:35 PM

Still unclear why you think I like American tennis so much. Nothing could be further from the truth?

You actually think Isner is going to beat Monfils? Why?

Tomic would get roasted by any American inside the Top 100. Not sure if Odesnik is in the Top 100 or not, but Wayne would roast him also.

And Tomic is not doing "well." Zero good ATP wins. Wish that wasn't the case because I want to see some bright rising talent, but unfortunately Tomic is not the answer.

Probably why is attitude is so bad. Knows he won't get any attention with his play.

RickyDimon , 1/21/10 9:41 PM

Poor kid.
22h ... bottle of milk and straight to bed. That's healthy life. He will live 150 years, unfortunately for him without ATP win... and GS...lol

zare , 1/21/10 10:10 PM

Tomic did himself no favors with his childish tirade. If you want to play with the big boys, then act like one, for heaven's sake! There is no place in men's tennis for a crybaby. If the top players can deal with playing at insane early morning hours, then this kid better get used to it. The world doesn't revolve around him and the sooner he realizes it, the better.

With that kind of attitude, Tomic has absolutely no future in tennis.

Nativenewyorker , 1/21/10 10:25 PM

i think what tomic did was a favour for the mens game. he said it plain and simple we dont want to play so late, and its about time someone said that to the officials. men have being getting screwed by these schedules far too often especially nadal.
because of womens matches going before the mens.
and no one in the mens tour had the balls to go out and say it the way tomic did because they would get the reaction tomic got if they said things like that.they would get villified and be called a whinger.

and finally it took a brash and fearless 17 year old to tell it like it is and speak his mind. even if tomic would have won, he would be so tired in the next match due to his sleeping patterns being disrupted. that was what he was meaning.

thanks bernie for standing up for the mens game, rest well champ!

attackingtennisrulez , 1/22/10 12:50 AM

great response from tomic here

attackingtennisrulez , 1/22/10 1:58 AM

I think tennis will be very interesting if Tomic ever wins a GS or even gets in the top 5. Not saying it will or won't happen but hey Roddick did it. I could just imagine his future matches against an equally immature Mandy. It would at least be entertaining to watch.

chr18 , 1/22/10 1:58 AM

Tomic vs Mandy entertaining? It will put everyone to sleep, maybe only chr18 and attackingtennis are the only two staying awake.

luckystar , 1/22/10 8:50 AM

I agree with vamosrafa, tomic has a very good slice backhand but that won't get him nowhere :)
speaking of youngsters, I personally like grigor dimitrov more, where is he? :(

huykle , 1/22/10 9:25 AM

Strange how so many people are picking apart a comment which Tomic is not the first to make - the scheduling at this tournament is harsh
Strange how no one is giving him credit for the way he played that night, and the way it probably gave him the right to something like that after the match...later he said, what could I say, it was two o clock....has anyone here played the 16th seed at a tournament at 2 o clock in the morning? no.

Also, would just like to say that all of the experts were wrong in their predictions, but they have not acknowledged just how much Tomic exceeded all expectations. I mean, seriously, he's only 17, and comes a few points short of beating Cilic? How many other 17 year olds have done that in recent history? And with the calm and composure he had on court?
To not even acknowledge the fact that he played out of his skin seems petty.
Of course, this is directed to the people who take the other arguement, not everyone has failed to acknowledge his play on this comment board.

Jyocka , 1/22/10 10:19 AM

The kid is laying a strong foundation as another boorish twat with an over-indulged sense of entitlement. And the father sure ain't going to help things, either. You got a wildcard into the tournament, you were given a centre court spot - bet Dimitrov amongst others would have loved the opportunity to have a late night.

sukhumvit , 1/22/10 10:37 AM

Maybe the officials will stop sucking up to him.

carrie , 1/22/10 10:55 AM

jyocka, that is exactly the point tennis australia is making - that instead of being graceful , tomic has turned attention on his sulkiness and lack of grace so that in the aftermath of his match - and pre-ao performances - instead of it being about his talent and potential, he turned into into a huge spectacle about the scheduling. even bagghy who finished at 4:34 am and has more reason to complain is laughing at him. bagghy lost to hewitt that match but gave due credit. tomic is not the first or last player to suffer from that. to not acknowledge cilic as the winner and sulk "if it was in the day i'd have won" is shite. if it was in the day he'd say "if it was at night and cooler i'd have won because in the day the sun is so bright a 17-yr-old can't see". when you make a spectacle of yourself, it's YOUR won fault when people's
attention turn to your attitude and not your tennis. he only has his big mouth to blame. for the last 3 years he's brought the wrong kind of attention to himself, walking off court, geting his funding cut by tennis oz, etc, being disrespectful. we haven't heard the last from this brat!

nick lindhal who beat him to earn the wildcard deserved the centre court timeslot!
