Serbia's Novak Djokovic earned a third round berth with a 4 set win over Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli.
The world No.3 overcame a difficult start for the second match in succession to beat Marco Chiudinelli 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.
Djokovic struggled in the opening set, hitting 16 unforced errors, and he was unable to find any consistency off the ground. He did, though earn the first break of the match to lead 3-2, but immediately gave away the advantage, choosing an inopportune moment to serve his only double fault of the first. Chiudinelli then broke through again before coming through a tricky service game to win the set.
Djokovic produced a far better display in the second frame, racing through it 6-1. He managed to find some rhythm from the baseline, punishing Chiudinelli’s forays into the forecourt with some sweetly timed passing shots. The Serb opened up a 3-1 lead and broke once more before claiming the set. Chiudinelli, though, was not without his chances. The Swiss created six break point opportunities in Djokovic’s first three service games, but he was unable to take any of them.
The third set was equally easy for Djokovic. He charged into a 3-0 lead and Chudinelli took an injury timeout to receive treatment for a foot problem. The world No.58 managed to pull one of the breaks back to register his only game. That, however, gave him only temporary respite and lost the next three games to fall 2-1 behind.
Chudinelli hit with greater precision in the fourth frame and had two early chances to go up a break. He couldn’t take them though and he pushed a backhand wide to hand Djokovic a 5-3 advantage. The Serb had no problems serving for the match, wrapping up victory in just under three hours.
Djokovic, though, will need to up his level if he has hopes of winning the title. He hit 61 unforced errors and won just 27 per cent of points behind his second serve. He will face Denis Istomin in the next round. The Uzbekistani beat Michael Michael Berrer in straight-sets.
