Rafael Nadal breezed through his second round match against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko.
Rafael Nadal took one step closer to defending his title with a straight-set victory over Lukas Lacko. This was certainly not Nadal at his very best, but the straight-set win was just what Nadal needed. The match was not of a particularly high quality, but that had much to do with the fact that Lacko could barely keep the ball in play.
Points rarely lasted longer than four strokes and as a result, Nadal never really found any sort of match rhythm. The Spaniard had double the number of unforced errors as winners (30 errors to 15 winners), but that statistic was once again due to the kind of match that Lacko played.
Nadal broke Lacko seven times in the match, playing well when he had to and allowing the Slovak to self-destruct the rest of the time.
The world No. 2 awaits the winner of Philipp Kohlschreiber and Wayne Odesnik in the third round.

i missed it. i was asleep. but very happy with the result. that's a nice thing to wake up to :)
hope he has a better match next round. he needs a few where he can get into a rhythm if he's to go far in this tourney

Yep I missed it too, there are only so many nights of Rafa I can lose sleep over, saying that I woke up around 6 and rushed down to check the results online! so relieved he got through comfortably enough though, shame he didn't play as good as he can but its hard to find your A game when there isn't much resistance out there, you lose focus easily. I even think Rafa would like a longer match to help him find his rhythum.

tomic appears to have borrowed rafa's outfit

"tomic appears to have borrowed Rafa's outfit"
Yes I spotted that too Sib. Only the shorts though - both are sponsored by Nike!

Yes it goes to show how much charisma Nadal has when you see his outfit(or similar) on another player. With a fine proportioned physique like Rafa's its far more marketable than on the lanky Tomic.

Guys, those who've managed to view the Rafa/Lacko's match, don't we think it the huge highlight of that day? I certainly have faith Rafa's form is improved, playing accurate with the speed taking things in perspective. A more volatile moment for the two players producing sufficiently.

i didnt get to see the match, but good to hear that Rafa's form was much improved.

It would have been a total whitewash, but Cheryl is right, Rafa's performance was due to Lacko as an opponent. It looked "lighter"comparedto his practice session.

Rafa-lite, rafa med (perhaps this evening) and then full bodied Rafa for the second week. Ha.

i just watched this back on sky plus. he played better than i thought reading this report. his forehand seems to be almost back to normal
Sib69 , 1/21/10 10:39 PM
From this match- lol... Nadal's reaction to the question is pricless.
