No. 5 seed Andy Murray got past France’s Marc Gicquel in straight sets, as he steps ever closer to a quarterfinal showdown with Rafael Nadal.
Andy Murray def. Marc Gicquel
Andy Murray did not play particularly clean tennis in the breezy conditions in Melbourne on Wednesday, but Marc Gicquel was so much worse that Murray looked masterful. The Scot won the opening set 6-1, but he still had nine winners and eight unforced errors. Gicquel donated heavily to the Murray cause with just two winners and a whopping 12 unforced errors for the set.
Murray’s game got slightly shakier in the second set and Gicquel was able to pick up a few more games, but the Frenchman was never really on in the match. The Scot closed out the win with three breaks of Gicquel’s serve in the third set.
John Isner def. Louk Sorensen
American John Isner had a surprisingly difficult time with Irish qualifier Louk Sorensen. Isner was surely feeling the results of his first-round five-set match against Andreas Seppi. Sorensen is ranked 284th at the moment, but he went toe-to-toe with No. 28 Isner for the last two sets of their match. The American committed a shocking 51 unforced errors (and 61 winners) for the match so that most of the points ended on his racket one way or the other. Isner will take on Gael Monfils in the third round.
Gael Monfils def. Antonio Veic
France’s Monils posted a relatively uncomplicated, straight-set win over Antonio Veic of Croatia. Monfils had slightly more errors than winners in the match (24 unforced errors, 23 winners), and he tossed in a surprising seven double-faults to go with his seven aces. Still, the No. 224 ranked Veic had few answers when the chips were down.

Hopefully Gael will beat Isner. Gael played atrociously against Isner the last time they met at IW 09, and I remember I was so pissed off by him. Despite being a better player than Isner, he chose to run and run and allowed Isner to push him further and further away from the baseline. It was a shameful performance by Gael then, not even bother to change his game plan and adjust his position.

well, 61 unforced errors in a 3 set match is not a good sign for Isner. I'm not sure I expect much out of him in the Monfils match anyway.

i highly doubt Murray will even play Isner

alex: rushed home after work and watched Andy's replay! Hooray for the BBC. Apart from the usual lapses of concentration, I thought Andy played well. His percentage first serve was way up and he was volleying! He's such a good volleyer I wonder why he doesn't do it more often. I also thought he was more aggressive on his forehand. Come on!
Ricky??

It's OK Ricky, I've just read chery's comment and assume yours follows.

what?

deuce - yes, a bit more encouraging today against a much tougher opponent. It's like muzz raises his game when he needs to. Like you say, it's great to see more net play, volleying and pacey, penetrating forehands, and not nearly so many of those non-descript mid-court high bouncers that invite his opponent to have a go at him. I know it's early days but I'd like to see his lobs (normally one of his best shots) working better. I've only seen one good one so far. I mean, muzz is a guy capable of repeatedly lobbing Karlovic, so hopefully there'll be a bit more in that department.

Calling alex for our everyotherdayupdate! To me Andy is looking fitter and better than I've seen him look for ages and ages. Two most glorious shots against Florent up far 2 early again! Am glad he's got Isner next. I absoluttely love monfils, he's so unpredictable and dangerous and I didn't want him on fire against Andy. Isner is tough but his game is predictable. Andy in 4. Come on!
BTW what on earth happened to Cleisters? Cheering 4 Henin now.

I'm happy with his willingness to hit a winner. The only thing makes me worry is his serve. During the first set, I try to contain myself not to yelling:"Andy, can you just put the bloody first serve in." Can he find his rhythm soon?
I'm watching Nadal right now. This game is awful and it makes me more confident in Andy if he can make it through.

So much for "attacking tennis rules," right?

Murray jerks his body way too much with those massive sprints and running, he may find himself injured.
I think Isner has a shot, just needs to be aggressive from the baseline, keep his serve and when on the net just watch for the cross court shots.

I watched the whole Isner match. Sorensen easily could have won the 2nd and the third, and obviously if he had pulled out the second the match would have pretty much over.
Isner was barely moving for the entire last set and a half, but he came up with some absolutely shocking serves and forehands at the big moments.
not much to say about Murray and Monfils' performances, except that another Isner-Monfils match will be good.
